Athletes - Tommy Amaker

Tommy Amaker is the head coach of the University of Michigan men's basketball team. He took the job in Michigan in 2001, after being the head coach at Seton Hall University. Prior to that, he served as an assistant coach at Duke University under Mike Krzyzewski
from 1988-97.

Amaker was a star point guard at Duke. As a junior in 1986, he was part of a team that finished as national runner-up in the NCAA Tournament.

As a player, he also won a gold medal as a member of Team USA in the 1986 FIBA World Basketball Championship.

As head coach, Amaker took the Seton Hall Pirates to postseason play four consecutive times, reaching the "Sweet Sixteen" (third round) of the NCAA Tournament in 2000. At Michigan, his team won the NIT title in 2004.

Many fans and sportswriters are of the opinion that Amaker's teams tend to underachieve and fall apart in pressure situations. His Seton Hall teams often finished the season poorly, and Amaker's critics gained even more fodder in 2006, when a senior-laden Michigan team failed to make the NCAA Tournament after starting the season 16-3. However, that team was riddled with injuries to key contributors Lester Abram, Dion Harris, Chris Hunter, and Jerrett Smith.

Amaker is noteworthy for his choice of attire during games. He typically sports a mock turtleneck and sportscoat on the bench.
