Trevor William Hoffman (born October 13, 1967 in Bellflower, California) is a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball who has played with the San Diego Padres since 1993. Previously, he played for the Florida Marlins (1993). He bats and throws right-handed.

Career

Originally signed as a shortstop by the Cincinnati Reds in 1989, Hoffman was converted to a pitcher in 1991 after batting .212 with 23 RBI in 103 games while playing short and third for Single-A Charleston, then a Cincinnati Reds minor league affiliate. He was taken by the Florida Marlins in the Rule V draft in 1992, and was traded to the San Diego Padres in the middle of the 1993 season for slugger Gary Sheffield. In a 13-season career, Hoffman has posted a 49-52 record with 432 saves and a 2.76 ERA in 817.1 innings. On May 6, 2005 he recorded his 400th save against the St. Louis Cardinals. He is only the third person to do so, following John Franco (424 saves) and Lee Smith (478 saves). On August 24, 2005, Hoffman passed Franco for second place on the all-time saves list with 425 after the Padres beat the Houston Astros 7-4. Through the 2005 season he has 436 career saves, and trails Smith by only 42 saves.

Hoffman is known for his signature Hell's Bells entrance song as he leaves the bullpen to enter the game.

Trevor Hoffman's changeup is widely considered the best in baseball.
