Books - A Storm of Swords

A Storm of Swords is the third book in A Song of Ice and Fire, a fantasy series by George R. R. Martin.

A Storm of Swords is set in a fictitious world reminiscent of Europe in the Middle Ages (primarily on a continent called Westeros), except for the fact that in this world, seasons can last decades. The tale is told through the point of view of 10 main characters:

  • Lady Catelyn Stark, of House Tully, widow of Eddard Stark
  • Sansa Stark, eldest daughter of Eddard Stark and Catelyn Stark, held captive by the King on the Iron Throne at King's Landing
  • Arya Stark, youngest daughter of Eddard Stark and Catelyn Stark, missing and presumed dead
  • Brandon Stark, called Bran, son of Eddard Stark and Catelyn Stark, heir to the North, believed dead
  • Jon Snow, bastard son of Eddard Stark
  • Samwell Tarly, sworn brother of the Night's Watch and former heir to Horn Hill
  • Tyrion Lannister, youngest son of Tywin Lannister, a dwarf, brother of Ser Jaime Lannister, heir to Casterly Rock
  • Ser Jaime Lannister, eldest son of Tywin Lannister, brother of Tyrion Lannister, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and Warden of the East, held captive by the King in the North at Riverrun
  • Ser Davos Seaworth, a smuggler turned knight
  • Queen Daenerys Targaryen, Stormborn, of the Targaryen Dynasty

Plot

The Battle of the Blackwater Rush is over as fast as it begins, Stannis's army has fallen apart in fear and his fleet is destroyed by wildfire and dashed against the Imp's Chain, and the Lannisters have won. Qhorin Halfhand is slain at his own command in a duel to the death with Jon Snow, the King Beyond the Wall is preparing to attack, and Jon finds himself a turncoat and marching with the king. While with the wildings, Jon meets Ygritte, a wilding spearwife, and soon finds himself in a deep sexual relationship with her. The Night's Watch is in turmoil with its number slowly dwindling, Daenerys is in dire need of an army to take back her kingdom, Bran and his friends are still in search of the three-eyed crow, and the kingdom is falling apart — and to make things worse, Winter is coming. In this third book from the series A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin leads us through the trials of those who seek to call themselves King and those whose lives were destroyed by the war, through unseen victories, stunning failures, and unexpected betrayals.
