Books - Martin the Warrior

Martin the Warrior is a fantasy novel by Brian Jacques, published in 1993. It is the sixth book in the Redwall series.

Martin the Warrior tells the story of a young mouse named Martin, a slave in Marshank under the cruel stoat Badrang. When Badrang tortures him, a young mouse princess named Laterose and a mole named Grumm hear his cries and try to help him. When Martin is imprisoned, Martin meets Rose's brother Brome and a squirrel, Felldoh. The three plan to escape from Marshank and succeed, though Felldoh and Brome are separated from the others. Felldoh and Brome meet the Rambling Rosehip Players and join forces with them, eventually freeing the slaves. Meanwhile, Martin, Rose and Grumm meet a hedgehog named Pallum after being imprisoned by pigmy shrews. They are eventually freed, along with Pallum. After a long adventure, the four adventurers reach Noonvale, Rose and Grumm's home. They gather an army there, but it is not large enough. Boldred, a scholarly owl, explains that she has gathered an army larger than the one Martin has made, including the pigmy shrews; the Gawtrybabes, a group of savage squirrel babes; and other characters Martin has met. The entire army then sails to Marshank and reach it in good timing, since the Rambling Rosehip Players are in a predicament. All the vermin that lived in Marshank and served Badrang were slain along with Badrang.

Sadly, many on the heroic side are also slain, including Rose, with whom Martin was in love. Martin is overcome with grief and heads south, leaving all his friends behind to find a new life. He swears never to speak of Rose or Noonvale again, deciding simply to relate a tale of living by the sword until the time came to move on southward. After his battle with Tsarmina the Wildcat, Martin forgets every other version of the story and comes to believe his own alibi. Perhaps this is fortunate, as it allows him to live happily, as Rose would have wanted him to.

The story of Martin and Rose is later brought to Redwall by a descendant of Brome and Pallum, who accompanies it with a sprig of climbing-rose culled from that which grew on Rose of Noonvale's grave. This becomes the Late Rose of Redwall.
