Books - The Prince of Tides

The Prince of Tides is a 1986
novel by Pat Conroy. It tells the story of the narrator's struggle to overcome the psychological damage inflicted by his dysfunctional childhood in South Carolina. In 1991, it was adapted to film by producer/director Barbra Streisand from a screenplay by Conroy and Becky Johnston.

Story

The Prince of Tides tells the story of a Tom Wingo, teacher and football coach who is reluctant to help his twin sister's psychiatrist unlock their dysfunctional family's secrets. When the sister, Savannah Wingo, attempts suicide again, Tom, must go to New York to help her. Upon reaching the hospital where she is staying, he finds that she is in such a bad condition that she cannot help her psychiatrist understand the extent of her problems.
