| The Daewoo Kalos is a subcompact automobile built by GM Daewoo, a South Korean subsidiary of General Motors. It is rebadged for export markets under a variety of names, the most common being the Chevrolet Kalos, Chevrolet Aveo and Holden Barina. The Kalos is based on the "Daewoo Flex" concept previewed at Frankfurt 2001. It replaced the discontinued Daewoo Lanos and was also styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The car started production in 2002; it originally came in two versions, a 4-door sedan and a 5-door hatchback. A 3-door hatchback was added for the European market from 2005. Most Kalos/Aveos are assembled in the Pupyong plant in South Korea. In Ukraine, Russia and Venezuela, local versions of the Aveo are assembled from CKD. Initial research and platform engineering work was carried out at Daewoo's Worthing Technical Centre in the UK, with the bulk of the development programme being completed at Daewoo's main Technical Center at Pupyong in Korea. Badge engineeringThe Daewoo Kalos is marketed under the Chevrolet Aveo nameplate in North America, South America, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, China, South Africa, and the Middle East. However, in Australia and New Zealand it is marketed as the Holden Barina.
EnginesIn its home market, the Kalos comes equipped with the 1.2 L SOHC S-TEC and 1.5 L E-TEC II engines. In Europe, the 1.2 is joined by 1.4 L SOHC and DOHC versions of the E-TEC II; Asian/Ukrainian markets receive the same 1.5 L as found in Korea; North American and Venezuelan versions come with the 1.6 L derivative of the E-TEC II engine.ReplacementFor 2006, the new Daewoo Gentra, designed in cooperation with PATAC, appeared. The sedan version was shown at the Shanghai Auto Show; the car first hit the Korean market in September 2005. Three-door and five-door hatchback versions will arrive by fall 2006. These vehicles will replace the Kalos/Aveo, but the Aveo name will continue to be used in most global markets. The 2007 Chevrolet Aveo sedan debuted in January at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show. Sales will commence in North America in the summer. Future designs for this market segment will be integrated with the GM Gamma platform, sharing components with similar models developed by Opel.
