The S-MAX is a compact MPV from Ford Motor Company in Europe. Introduced at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, the S-MAX goes on sale alongside the redesigned Galaxy in 2007. It is intended as an upscale/sporty alternative to the traditional MPV, and slots between the large Galaxy and small Focus C-Max compact MPV.
The S-MAX is the first vehicle to feature Ford's "kinetic design" styling. A replacement for the new edge design started in the late 1990s, kinetic design debuted with the Ford SAV concept at the 2005 Geneva show. It includes angular headlights, a narrow grille, and large trapezoidal "mouth" below the bumper.
One major selling point of the S-MAX is its "FoldFlatSystem". This design allows the second- and optional third-row seats to fold flat into the floor. The small third row leads Ford to classify the vehicle as a "5+2", meaning that the rear seats are only for occasional use.
