Cars - LaDawri GT-6

The LaDawri GT-6 (1959-1966), manufactured in Sicily, was priced to occupy the same market niche as the Maserati Mexico, the Jaguar XK150
and the Jaguar E-type
. The body was hammered from aircraft-grade aluminum, over hardwood forms, also known as bucks. These panels were riveted from the inside, welded on the outside, then hop hornbeam wood was placed inside for bracing. The engine was based on the old 225 cubic inch Plymouth car engine block, but with an overhead cam cylinder head, cast aluminum pistons, and numerous other heavy-duty parts, many developed with the help of Maserati
. The chassis was a very sturdy, but fairly lightweight I-beam structure, with a De Dion-type rear axle and a crude Plymouth-based front suspension. The interiors were equipped with a solid burlwood dash panel, full Veglia instrumentation, lighted toggle switches, an impressive-looking Nardi steering wheel with wood rim, and a Blaupunkt AM/FM/SW radio with twin speakers. The front seats were an inhouse design, covered with glove-leather. The rear seats were small to the point where one preschool-aged child would be uncomfortable. The grille was a Remington shaver-type (many vertical bars inside an oblong or rectangular frame). The wheels and tires were the same Borrani wires wrapped in Pirelli Cinturatos as used on contemporary Ferraris, Maseratis, Iso Rivoltas, and Lancias. There were six, and only six paint colors available, those being Racing Red, Bahama Blue, Black, White, Green, and Gunmetal. Interior colors were as follows: Tan, Black, and Burgundy, all with black carpeting. Around 24,000 were made, about half exist today worldwide. The LaDawri family now owns a boatbuilding factory where the car plant was from 1959 to 1966.
