The Mercury Marquis was introduced in 1967 as Mercury's top-line car, similar to the Ford LTD. Early models came with the 429 big-block engine. Later models got either the big-block 460 or the 400 Cleveland, later replaced by the 351M. The Grand Marquis was introduced as a luxury trim package for the Marquis in 1975. The models were split in 1983, with the Grand Marquis on the fullsize Panther platform and the Marquis moved to the Fox platform. The midsize Marquis was available with the 2.3L SOHC T-88 four-cylnder as the base engine. 1983 models could have the 200 cid Mileage Maker straight six. In 1984, the 200 was dropped in favor of the 232 Essex V-6, and the 302 Windsor V-8 was made available. It was produced in Chicago, Illinois until 1986, when it was replaced by the Mercury Sable. It is not to be confused with the Grand Marquis.
