The RUF Rt 12 is a sports car built by RUF of Germany and built on the 997-Generation Porsche 911 Carrera S.Model InformationRUF introduced the model in the Fall of 2004 at the Essen Motor Show as the first of their offerings built on Porsche's new 997-platform. A twin-turbocharged, bored-out 3.8 litre flat-six cylinder engine based on the previous 996 series Turbo engine provides power, producing output of 530, 560 or 650 horsepower respectively, depending on which version of the turbo system is purchased ( 530 and 560 versions use a non-bored 996 3.6 liter engine). This makes the Rt 12 a viable alternative to the upcoming 997 Turbo, which will produce a base 480 horsepower. Added is the fact the Rt 12 can be had with either rear-wheel or all-wheel-drive, as opposed to the 911 Turbo, which will be available only with Porsche's all-wheel-drive system. This choice of drivetrain RUF offer is an important feature for wealthy "purists" who feel that all 911s must be rear-wheel-drive in order to remain true to the marque. The Rt 12 features specially developed RUF bodywork, giving the vehicle a unique appearance while also functioning to increase downforce, helping make the vehicle more stable at high speed. Enlarged, cross-drilled brakes are part of the package as well, although some debate has arisen as to how much of an upgrade the system actually provides over the factory-optional ceramic brakes that Porsche offers on "S" model 997s. In addition, RUF choose to replace the factory "active" suspension system with a static system of their own design. A RUF system with hydraulic control, developed together with Öhlins, which can raise ride-height for driveway entries and exits is available optionally. PerformanceTesting of the 650 horsepower version of the Rt 12 placed it among the fastest production cars in the world, with a 0-60 time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed nearing 230 miles per hour, giving it superior straight-line performance when compared to the current genertion of supercars, such as the Ferrari Enzo, Porsche Carrera GT, and Mercedes-McLaren SLR. More expensive vehicles like the Porsche/Dauer 962 roadcar, Bugatti Veyron and McLaren F1 are faster, but are either much more expensive or no longer in production.[ Visit the complete Wikipedia entry for RUF Rt 12 ] Some related entries: McLaren Cars | Hummer H3 | City car | BMW Z4 | Subaru R1 | BMW Z4 | Dodge Diplomat | Full-size car | Supermini car | BMW 8 Series | Porsche 718 This page is based on the copyrighted Wikipedia article RUF Rt 12; it is used under the GNU Free Documentation License.
