The Toyota FJ40 is the model designation for a Toyota Land Cruiser made from 1960 until 1983. Most FJ40 Land Cruisers were built as two-door vehicles with approximately the same dimensions as a Jeep CJ.
In the 1950s, the US Army contacted Toyota with a request for a four wheel drive vehicle to be used by soldiers and military police stationed in Japan. Toyota took the request seriously, and built the FJ40 as a result. All FJ40 Land Cruisers were two-door four wheel drive trucks with a removable hardtop roof, doors and a folding windshield, allowing for "open-air" driving. Some of them came from the factory equipped with a Warn M-8274 4-ton winch.
Closely related to the FJ40 are the Toyota FJ45, a pickup-truck variant, and the Toyota FJ55, a four-door percursor to today's SUVs.
Toyota has recently planned to release the FJ Cruiser, a modern SUV styled after the original FJ40. The FJ Cruiser will go on sale in spring 2006.
