Cars - Volkswagen Gol

The Volkswagen Gol is a subcompact
hatchback car, created in Brazil by Volkswagen. It's built either with 3 or 5 doors, and is Volkswagen's entry-level car in that market.

The Gol, which takes its name from the Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish word for 'goal' (European Portuguese word is Golo) is not to be confused with the Volkswagen Golf.

Derivative cars

As the Gol was created as a platform rather than just a car, some derivatives were produced soon after:

  • Saveiro, a lightweight pickup truck.
  • Parati, a station wagon, known as Gol Country in Argentina.
  • Voyage, a sedan car (no longer manufactured). In Brazil the two-door sedan was called the VW Voyage, and in Argentina, the VW Gacel (four-doors were sold as the VW Amazon in Brazil and VW Senda in Argentina).
Both sedan and wagon versions were sold in the United States and Canada in the mid-1980s as the Volkswagen Fox
.

History

The Gol was created in 1980 to replace the Brasilia, which was in turn a replacement to the Beetle in the Brazilian market. With a design unique to Latin America, the Gol featured the air-cooled, Boxer engine from the Beetle, but front-mounted. In the mid-80s, this engine was replaced by the water-cooled engine from the VW Passat.

The Gol has uninterruptedly been the best-selling car in Brazil since 1987, and since 1998 in Argentina. Gol sales in South America are also high; 4.5 million Gols have been produced since 1980.

As a result of a joint-venture with Kerman Khodro, the Gol has been built in Iran since 2005. It is currently sold in Mexico and Russia as the Volkswagen Pointer, a name previously used in Latin America for a model based on the rebadged Ford Escort.

Along the years the Gol received several major changes in style. In September 2005 the "fourth generation" (in fact the last restyling of the Gol II) was released in Brazil.

As of 2006, multiple generation overlapping (that ocurred in previous years) have been dropped from production. Volkswagen currently sells three versions, "City", "Plus" and "Power", with increasing price and build quality. Still, it is placed as an entry-level below the other two Volkswagen superminis, the Fox
and Polo.

Expected future

This Generation 4 is expected to last for two years, as a next-generation Gol with a completely new design is to be built in 2007.
