AVALANCHE (always fully capitalised) is a fictional rebel and eco-terrorist organization from the Square Co., Ltd. RPG Final Fantasy VII. It is their mission to save the planet from the work of Shin-Ra, a multi-conglomorate super-industry which effectively controls the world.

While Shin-Ra deems AVALANCHE a bunch of ecoterrorists, it is clear that Shin-Ra are going to destroy the planet if left unhindered. They make their money by draining the 'lifeforce' of the Planet, a strange subterranean ethereal substance called the Lifestream. This they convert with ugly Mako Reactors into Mako energy which is used for fuel and power generation, such as the generation of electricity.

The effect of draining a planet's Lifestream will eventually cause all life on the planet to die out, and the planet itself to crumble into space. Thus, AVALANCHE take it upon themselves to rid the world of the Mako Reactors and Shin-Ra, for the good of all life.

Final Fantasy VII

AVALANCHE's headquarters are located in Midgar, the centre of Shin-Ra's industry and power. This city is massive, circular, polluted and made mostly of metal. It possesses eight towering mako reactors along its circumference, which each feed the main tower in its center. Each part of Midgar sectioned off by the reactors used to be a self-standing city, each with their own names, but now are simply referred to by number, such as "Sector 7." Pollution began to mount as production increased, and a new level was added to the city blocking all light to the slums below, and trapping pollution and smog making it a very horrible place to live.

Because of this, the people of the slums are very poor, malnourished and unhealthy due to the pollution and darkness making it very hard to survive. Shin-Ra does nothing to aid the people of Midgar in this state, instead favoring those rich enough to exist on the surface. It is in the slums of the seventh sector where AVALANCHE homes its hideout and HQ, in a basement, in a pub called 7th Heaven.

At the beginning of the game, a very large and strong black man called Barret Wallace is the leader of AVALANCHE. Tifa Lockhart is also a member of the resistance, being the owner of the 7th Heaven. She convinces her childhood friend and supposed ex-Shin-Ra SOLDIER (Shin-Ra's elite) Cloud Strife to accept a bombing mission at the start of the game and join with AVALANCHE.

The other three members of AVALANCHE at this point in the storyline are called Jessie, Biggs and Wedge.

AVALANCHE wants to begin its mission by bombing the eight Mako Reactors that surround the eight sectors of Midgar. Cloud and his friends manage to take down two of these before they are caught by Shin-Ra. In an attempt to destroy AVALANCHE, Shin-Ra blows up one of the pillars that supports the upper level above Sector 7, thus causing the plate to crush Sector 7 where the AVALANCHE headquarters are known to be. This kills many people, including Jessie, Biggs and Wedge.

After this, AVALANCHE moves on with greater determination, and their cause ultimately leads Cloud to a confrontation with the semi-deified legendary Shin-Ra hero Sephiroth, who has surpassed Shin-Ra itself and threatens the planet in an even more profound way. When Cloud defeats him, Midgar and Shin-Ra are destroyed in the process, and the planet is saved.

Barett Wallace was the original leader of AVALANCHE in Final Fantasy VII, however after leaving Midgar to escape from Shin-ra and find Sephiroth (Disc 1), they decided that Cloud should be the leader of their journey. Later in Disc 2 Barett realizes that he isn't cut out to be the leader of AVALANCHE and with Cloud and Tifa absent at the moment Barett makes Cid the temporary leader.

Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII

Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII stands as a prequel to Final Fantasy VII, and expands upon many hitherto untouched aspects of the storyline. We discover that AVALANCHE was founded by a woman named Elfe after the Midgar-Wutai war. We are also introduced to some new characters:

Elfé:

The leader of AVALANCHE who wields a katana. Over the course of the story, she is shown getting weaker and weaker, a result of Fuhito's experiments involving her and a mysterious summon materia known as "Zirconiade". She is taciturn and surprising uncharismatic. She is rumoured to be connected to Veld, the current leader of the Turks.
