| The Abandoned or Sunken Ship is a common location in video games, especially action-adventure and RPGs. These are based on the real event of shipwrecks, when a ship either sinks at sea or crashes onto land. Occasionally the wrecked ship was a spaceship, not an ocean-faring vessel. Abandoned ships more often than not have air in them, despite the fact that this would make the wreck float. This is because the game's characters typically cannot breathe water, and it is simpler to ignore physics (see video game physics) than shoehorn an explanation for gills or a scuba suit into the plot. Abandoned ships tend to be populated with water- and undead-themed enemies, especially pirates and zombies. The enemies are either the remants of the crew, or whatever oceanic monsters might be using the ship as a haven. These ships are also often filled with sunken treasure in the form of items and money.
