Games - Air Units in Nintendo Wars

All air units are built and repaired only at Airports. Air units burn fuel at the start of each phase; the amount depends on what unit it is. When an air unit runs out of fuel, it crashes.

Air units are not restricted by terrain at all (except Pipes in Advance Wars 2 and Advance Wars DS, which halts them altogether), but they do not get to enjoy terrain benefits.

Helicopters

Two types of helicopters are present in Advance Wars games - the Battle Copter (B Copter) and Transport Copter (T Copter). Battle Copters' primary uses are firing at (with a machine gun and a pod of rockets) earth-bound units, especially infantry, and the less powerful tanks, but can fire at other land units as well, and also other Battle Copters and Transport Copters, but cannot shoot down planes, while fighters can take out helicopters easily. Transport copters are like air versions of APCs, as they can transport infantry units. However they, just like the APC, have no weapons and low amounts of durability against enemy fire. In addition, unlike the Advance Wars APC, they can't resupply allied units. T-Copters are also often-needed units in a battle as they can help transport infantry units across long distances over all terrain types, such as to an enemy headquarters.

Pre-Game Boy Wars 3

Only one helicopter existed in Famicom Wars: the Transport Helicopter. It used only a machine gun that dealt low amounts of damage. But it could still transport foot soldiers.

The Battle Helicopter was added to Game Boy Wars 1/2/Turbo, though it couldn't do much damage with its primary weapon.

The Battle Helicopter fared better in Super Famicom Wars, being able to deal better damage, though the Transport Helicopter lost its machine gun, and machine guns could not be used against planes in Super Famicom Wars with only particular exceptions, making the Battle Helicopter helpless against Fighters and Attackers.

Game Boy Wars 3

There was a third helicopter in Game Boy Wars 3: the Anti-Sea Helicopter (named "taisen heri", which actually means "Anti-Submarine Helicopter", but its torpedoes deal decent damage to other vessels as well). It packs torpedoes, giving it the best firepower out of all air units when handling vessels & making it ideal for swiftly sinking Submarines and any hapless ships that don't have direct-fire AA capabilities. A Battle Helicopter, a Fighter, or an Attacker could be used to knock the Anti-Sea Helicopter out of the sky without trouble though, as the Anti-Sea Helicopter doesn't have any decent weapons besides the Torpedoes.

Battle Helicopters and Transport Helicopters could also promote in GBW3; the former gains powerful ranged-fire AT Missiles, making it more than a match for any land unit since it could use its gatling gun for cars and foot soldiers; and the latter gains its own Missile launcher for land units and ships in addition to room for 2 foot soldier units.

All helicopters in Game Boy Wars 3 were slowed down by mountains, although the Movement cost was low. With the exception of the Transport Helicopter S, all helicopters' Initiative decreases at a bigger pace than planes' do.

Planes

Fighter planes, Bombers, and Stealth fighters are the three types of planes, or jets, in Advance Wars. The Fighter is only able to attack other aerial units, but they are very powerful against them and can destroy a unit of B-Copters in one hit. They also have a high movement range and better defencive capabilities than most other aerial units. Bomber planes can only attack ground and sea-based units, and do so by dropping bombs. Bombers are extremely powerful, but are also expensive and vulnerable to enemy Fighters, AA guns, and Missiles. Stealth fighters, another unit new to Advance Wars: Dual Strike can attack both aerial and ground units, and can enter a stealth mode, rendering them invisible to other Commanding Officers, unless one of their units is next to the Stealth Fighter. However, this increases their fuel consumption.

Famicom Wars and Game Boy Wars 1/2/Turbo

Famicom Wars and Game Boy Wars 1/2/Turbo have multiple Fighter Ranks: Fighter A and Fighter B. The Fighter B is weaker than the Fighter A but also costs less. In Game Boy Wars 1/2/Turbo, the Fighter B has less Movement Power and fuel, but could be resupplied by a Supply Truck, as it is actually a VTOL plane. In both, the Fighters can attack land units, though they don't do much damage.

Game Boy Wars 1/2/Turbo also has a Radar Transport Plane, which can Load any land unit (except the Cannon directly), but is only possible to deploy in Fog.

Super Famicom Wars

Super Famicom Wars doesn't have Fighters at multiple ranks; instead of a Fighter B, SFW has an Attacker, which can attack any unit (except Submarines) as opposed to the Fighter (which now attacks only air units), but doesn't deal as much damage as a Fighter or Bomber, and doesn't have a particularly high amount of ammo (for its primary weapon, since Fighters and Attackers in SFW have machine guns, though the Fighter's can only be used on enemy air units). Attackers can be shot down by anything with decent AA capabilities, particularly Fighters.
