The Alliance is one of the major factions in the Warcraft universe — a fictional universe in which a series of computer games and books are set.

After the events of the First Great War, Lord Lothar from the defeated nation of Azeroth met with King Terenas of Lordaeron, together they united all the Human kingdoms with the Dwarven nation of Khaz Modan, the High Elves of Quel'Thalas, and the Gnomes of Gnomeregan (though the Gnomes were never introduced until World of Warcraft to defeat the approaching Horde.

All nations joined with conviction besides Alterac and Gilneas. Gilneas was one of the strongest nations at the time, and felt that they could defend their own borders from impending invasion, but shortly afterwards hessitantly joined the Alliance. The weakest nation, Alterac, officially joined the Alliance but secretly had formed an alliance with the Horde. The Alliance was forced to destroy the nation of Alterac, which is currently occupied by Ogres.

However after the events of the Third Great War, contact was made with the Night Elves from Kalimdor, who have joined the Alliance as well. Many of the surviving High Elves, their kingdom destroyed, have begun to use warlock magic because of the loss of their Sunwell. With this, they became the Blood Elves and have joined the ranks of the Horde to sustain their need for dark magic. They will become a playable race for the Horde in the upcoming expansion, The Burning Crusade. The new race for the alliance has yet to be confirmed. Pandaren have been rumored to be the new race, but this has not been confirmed.

In World of Warcraft the playable races of the Alliance include the Humans, the Ironforge Dwarves, the Gnomes, and the Night Elves. However several splinter factions have decidedly split from the Alliance such as the Wildhammer Dwarves and the Blood Elves. Some High Elves continue to exist in the game as Alliance-friendly NPCs.
