| The Altmer, also called High Elves or Salache, are a race in The Elder Scrolls series. They are taller than the other races and have a golden skin color. They tend to be proud and consider themselves the most civilized race. Some TES players consider them to be a weaker race, for their weakness to magic, but they claim the greatest magika bonus of all the races. Altmer is the ancient elven name of their race, meaning High Folk, and most likely a derivation of the name of the first race of elves, the Aldmer, meaning First or Elder Folk. They consider themselves the successors of the Aldmer and the highest of all races. Unlike men, who believe themselves to have been created along with the world by the gods, Elves believe themselves to be descended from these gods, calling them the Aedra, "Ancestors". They view themselves as being lesser divinity, and believe that their godly stock has been muddied, resulting in current imperfections. As a result, High Elves breed themselves to more closely resemble the idealised depictions of mythical heroes and gods from their past, gradually de-emphasising physicality in favour of calm and virtuous inner natures, as well as keen intellects. Over millennia, they have bred to enhance the features they prize the most, allegedly euthanizing nine out of ten children for perceived imperfections. This has resulted in increased height, golden skin, noble features, and an increased sensitivity to magic, although creating many weaknesses as well. They are a highly inbred and stagnant people, valuing gradual positive evolution over revolutionary gambling; this is likely resultant of their static and exceedingly recessive nature, for which sudden great shifts often spell chaos and disaster. The arrogant nature of the Altmer resulted in many long wars since their first encounter with humans. Apparently despising the transient man-animals, they destroyed their settlements on Tamriel and enslaved the survivors. As a result, more humans returned to wage war. They were eventually defeated and made a part of the Empire. In spite of this, they maintain their racial isolation in their homeland and see all other races as inferior. They are also known for creating goblin armies by more or less taming the chieftains of goblin tribes. Altmer are immune to illness and are kin to the Dunmer and Bosmer and maybe even Dwemer.
