Games - Anima

==Anima Background== Anima Magic in the Fire Emblem
series of video games consists of a collection of offensive elemental magic spells in the game's Trinity of Magic. Anima is described as the magic of nature (akin to a Dungeons and Dragons druid's power) and the elements. Anima is divided up by attack attribute into each of the four elements of Fire Emblem: ice, lightning, fire and wind. The various spells using these elements are called (in order of increasing power) Fire, Thunder, Elfire, Bolting, Fimbulvetr, Excalibur and the S rank ultimate magic Forblaze. Fire and Elfire make use of fire attacks, while Thunder and Bolting make use of thunder. Fimbulvetr naturally uses ice, while Excalibur uses wind. Each game also includes one S rank ultimate magic, fitting in with all the S rank ultimate weapons of that game (there are usually nine), which is occasionally also the wind spell. (The S rank refers to the level of skill required to wield it: in Fire Emblem, a weapon user or magic user's proficiency with their weapon of choice is ranked from E, onto D, C, B, A and then S, with repeated use of a weapon type increasing skill level).

Anima in Fire Emblem: Path of Radience

In Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Anima magic was split into three types, Wind, Fire, and Thunder. Each of these types is effective against one of the types of laguz in this game. Wind magic is effective against bird laguz (and other flying units), fire magic is effective gainst beast laguz, and thunder magic is effective against dragon laguz.

Anima Attributes

Magic attacks in Fire Emblem are unique compared to other weapons: they can be freely executed from Melee range (in the game, one square away), bow range (two squares away) or in the case of Bolting, Long Range (3-10 squares away). This allows a magic user to attack an enemy without fear of a reprisal from melee attacks or bow attacks by avoiding the weapon's preferred range. Only another magic user is guaranteed a reprisal, and even then, Long Range attacks cannot be countered.

Like all attacks executeable in Fire Emblem games, Anima magic has a limited number of uses. This is controlled by the fact that each anima spell is associated with a magic book or grimoire that bequeaths a certain number of castings of that spell to the magic user holding it. Once the number is used up, the book's power is exhausted and it vanishes from the game. The uses range from 45 for basic fire spells to just five for the long range Bolting spell.

Magic in Fire Emblem consists of the so-called Trinity of Magic. This is a rock-paper-scissors style arrangement of magical forces. Anima magic excels against those who wield Light Magic as a weapon but is bested by those who wield Dark Magic. Similarly, Light magic banishes Dark Magic, while Dark Magic engulfs Anima Magic. The unit attacking with or against the Trinity is given or denied accuracy and damage, depending on which end of the scale they're on.

Anima Wielders

Those who wield anima magic are given special titles. The unpromoted unit that only wields anima magic is called a Mage. (For info about promotions and units please refer to the Fire Emblem
page.) In Fire Emblem 8, a special novice class called a Pupil also wields Anima magic exclusively. The usual promoted Mage is called a Sage, which can wield the fourth magic weapon (which lies outside the Trinity of Magic) Staves, as well as Anima. In Fire Emblem 8, Sages could also wield Light magic in addition to Anima and Staves. As well, a Mage could promote into a mounted Anima user called a Mage Knight, which uses Anima magic and Staves. Additionally, a promoted Shaman, a user of Dark magic known as a Druid, could wield Anima magic along with Dark magic and Staves. In previous Fire Emblems, the mounted Valkyrie class could wield Anima magic alongside Staves. In Fire Emblem 7, two unique classes, one of them called Archsage (believed by many to be the class that a Sage would promote into, if it could) and the other Dark Druid (believed to be a possible Druid promotion) could also wield Anima magic. These classes in fact had S rank for every magic type as well as staves.

Anima is widely considered by Fire Emblem players to be the best magic in the Trinity, due to its relatively low weight to damage ratio. Anima magic books have the lowest weight on average compared to the other two magics ("weight" in Fire Emblem refers to how much a weapon slows down the unit wielding it: this affects accuracy and speed of attack) while dealing the highest damage for books of that weight. Comparable Light magic books weigh as much or more and deal less damage, while compareable Dark magic books deal similar damage but weigh much more. The exception to this is the Bolting book, which weighs more than most Dark magic books.
