In the Dungeons & Dragons
role-playing game, barbarian is one of the base character classes. A barbarian is an uncivilised warrior, using brute strength and raw fury to prevail, rather than the carefully honed skills and feats of the fighter. Barbarians are the only class not automatically capable of reading or writing, though they can learn.

While the Player's Handbook depicts barbarians as savage brutes, in the campaign setting Eberron
, barbarians are presented more like nomads; while they may not be civilised in the general sense, they are certainly not animals.

The barbarian may not be as tactical as the fighter, they have certain abilities that makes them unique. First and foremost, barbarians have the ability to rage, which gives them enhanced strength and toughness for a limited time at the expenses of defense. They also gain the ability to react quicker to the dangers posed by traps, making them useful meat shields inside dungeons.

Due to social stigma, however, the barbarian class is one of the least popular classes played by D&D players. Only few players number the barbarian class in their favorites, most likely because of its roleplaying value.
