Games - Biff the Understudy

Biff the Understudy is a minor character in BioWare
's Baldur's Gate
game series--in fact, very minor, since in the first game and its expansion, he could only appear as the result of a bug: If a certain creature was supposed to say something, but due to an oversight or strange occurrence, that creature happened to be dead or otherwise not present at the time, the game would automatically create Biff the Understudy, who would speak the lines intended for the absent creature. This measure, odd though it looks on the surface, had its intended effect of making sure that the game's many plots and subplots did not get broken due to bugs.

In the last two games, BioWare's programmers were much more robust and thorough in their checking to make sure that characters who still had something to say weren't dead yet, so Biff the Understudy spent even more time waiting in the wings. But the oddness of Biff had a strong appeal among the game's fans, so BioWare wrote in a guaranteed encounter with him, where Biff does, in fact, get to play the role of an understudy (very BADLY too, thus explaining his repeated failure to get a true role of his own).
