Blackrock Depths is a location set in Blizzard Entertainments video game and book series, Warcraft. In the MMORPG World of Warcraft it acts as an instance dungeon.

Background

Where Blackrock Spire is controlled by the black dragon Nefarian, the Depths are currently ruled by Emperor Thaurissian and the Dark Iron Dwarves, under the influence of the firelord Ragnaros.

In World of Warcraft the daughter of the king of the dwarves, King Magni Bronzebeard, was ambushed and kidnapped by the Emperor.

Nomenclature

While geographical short forms are highly varied in any MMORPG, the most common shortforms referring to Blackrock Depths is "BRD". Alternatively, the instance (and parts of the instance) may be referenced by the names of bosses within the instance or specific missions/quests within the instance (for example, "Jail Break!").

Instance zone

Blackrock Depths is divided into two parts:

Prison and Eastern Shadowforge: 52-55 Most action of Jail Break! quest take place here. This part leads to Lord Incendius.
Shadowforge: 55-60 This area is more difficult, and like the bar, the lyceum requires mages or excellent use of area of effect attacks

Entering the instance will not lead immediately to the Dark Iron city proper. Instead the first area encountered consists of the Arena, the Jail, and the Quarry. Upon completing a quest given by the ghost of the architect of the city the Shadowforge key is obtained, and leads from the beginning areas to the main city complex.

Prior to entering the chambers that lead to Emperor Thaurissian is an entrance to the raid dungeon Molten Core. An attunement quest is required to enter the raid instance.

Blackrock Depths levels: 48-60
Suggested level: Low to mid 50's to 60, the level of the party depends on which part of Blackrock Depths the party intends to attempt.

Other Info

Level 60 players, generally those who are well-equipped from other instances and raid zones like Molten Core, use Blackrock Depths for "farming runs" to both General Angerforge and Lord Incendius. The former drops a very powerful trinket called the Hand of Justice which gives a chance to land an extra attack on your opponent, and Lord Incendius drops sought-after fire resist gear for Molten Core, as well as the Ace of Elementals Darkmoon Card which sells on most servers for a generous amount of gold.

Rogues and Druids can easily stealth to all the way to Incendius alone, although they must be well-geared to kill him solo. Any other class can make it to the last pair of Fire Elementals before Incendius by taking the path that leads to the bar, but jumping out the window looking over the path to Incendius and then remaining on the ledge until they fall out of combat. A Warlock can easily solo the pair of Fire Elementals by banishing one first. Again, actually killing Incendius requires a well-geared character.

Rogues are also able to do "bar runs" or "Shanker runs" referring to a certain powerful dagger that can be obtained by killing an NPC at the bar. This weapon, the Barman Shanker, which resembles a broken glass bottle, is highly sought after by most rogues due to its high damage potential.

The bar room area of BRD is also favoured by the hunter class, as the goblin miniboss 'Ribbly Screwspiggot' drops high quality quivers and ammo pouches, which the class rely on for storing arrows or bullets for their ranged weapons. Currently, the quiver available is 3rd in the rankings of capacity and attack speed modifier, falling behing the 'Harpy Hide Quiver' from Alterac Valley and the 'Ancient Sinew Wrapped Lamina' - which is currently the best one available, with 18 arrow slots. This quiver is available from the 'hunter epic quest' where the hunter must slay 4 powerful demons alone and collect 'sinews' from two powerful endgame dragon bosses - Azuregos and Onyxia. The ammo pouch or 'bandolier' that drops off Ribbly is considered to be the 2nd best in the game so far, falling behind the 'Gnoll Skin Bandolier' available at revered with Alterac Valley.
