Games - Blissey

Blissey (ハピナス Hapinasu in Japan, Leuphorie in French, Heiteira in German) is a fictional character in the Pokémon
series of games. Its National Pokédex
number is #242. Its Hoenn
Pokédex
number is #377.

Blissey's name derives from the word bliss. The suffix -ey is probably just taken from the name Chansey to show relation.

The Japanese name, ハピナス (hapinasu), has two possible origins. Much like the English name, the japanese name may simply be a shortening of the japanese translation of the word "happiness". The transliteration of "happiness" is ハッピーナース (happīnāsu). The other possible origin is a combination (and shortening) of the words "happy" and "nurse". The combination of the two words would be transcribed the same, "happī nāsu".

Characteristics

Blissey is a very caring and compassionate Pokémon. In fact, its fluffy coat of fur is attuned to feelings of sadness, and when it senses a sad person, it will rush over perhaps a great distance to that person and offer it an egg of condolence. This delicious egg contains a special power of happiness, causing any living thing to take even a bite of it to become unconditionally caring and pleasant to anyone around for the time being. Blissey is equally compulsive in caring for the ill; It will nuture any sick person or Pokémon it encounters back to health with loving care, using the healing powers held in its egg in its pouch as well.

Like Chansey, many Blisseys work as nurses in Pokémon Center
s.

In the Video Games

Blissey can only be obtained by evolving the elusive Chansey. Chansey's will evolve into Blissey at any level if its tameness (also known as "happiness") is sufficiently high.

Blissey is one of the most notorious Pokémon in the game, sharing the notoriety spotlight with the likes of Mewtwo
, Skarmory
and Kyogre
. Blissey's notoriety is due to the following factors:
  • Blissey has the most HP in the game, with a maximum of 714, the highest possible stat in Pokémon
  • Blissey has very high Special Defense
  • Blissey's only weakness is Fighting type attacks
  • Blissey can learn Softboiled, healing itself.
New players hate Blissey because of its probable role as the most used special "sponge" in the game, due to extremely high Hit Points and Special Defence statistics and knowledge of the Softboiled, Heal Bell and Aromatherapy recovery attacks, as well as the Natural Cure ability. Blissey forms part of the "SkarmBliss" combo which includes Skarmory
and Pokémon like Suicune
or Dusclops
to stall the opponent into submission. Many players will even quit a battle the moment a Blissey is sent out, so some players choose to use Chansey, Blissey's pre-evolved form, as a fair alternative.

Blissey is still quite flawed, hence not being labeled an über. Blissey is tied for having the poorest Attack and Defense stats in the game (after Chansey). Its speed is not too good either. On the other hand, Blissey's enormous HP makes it easy for it to survive even the strongest physical attacks, at least in most cases. Many Blissey-users equip Blissey with the attack Counter to destroy physical attackers.

In combination with the physical wall Skarmory
, Blissey forms one of the best-known Pokèmon two-on-two combinations: the Skarmbliss, when both of the two defenders, Blissey and Skarmory, switch between other highly defensive Pokemon, particularly Suicune and Dusclops, to consistently absorb physical and special attacks.

In the anime

Blissey appeared in the Johto arc episode "Ignorance is Blissey", as a Pokemon assistant in training to a Nurse Joy.

In the trading card game

Blissey has appeared only occasionally as Stage 1 Colorless Pokemon:
  • Neo Revelation
  • Aquapolis
  • EX Unseen Forces (as Blissey EX)
