Butch Breakdown is a character in Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends
, and is probably either a Ford or a Bedford breakdown lorry used in the 1950s and 1960s.

Although Butch does not appear in The Railway Series
, he has made quite a few appearances in the television episodes produced since 1998.

Butch rarely speaks, but he is said to have a heart of gold. There are some times when his face actually disappears in episodes for unexplained reasons, and his likeness in the Ertl toy range simply calls him "Sodor Recovery Unit". His colour scheme is overall yellow, with blue sides (On these are white letters reading SODOR HEAVY RECOVERY UNIT) and his numberplate is BRK 03, perhaps implying that there are other breakdown trucks on the island.

Butch has appeared in almost every episode of Thomas that has been directed by Steve Asquith. In fact, Butch made an uncredited cameo in Thomas and the Magic Railroad, while Henry the Green Engine was unhappily weaving around sidings filled with trucks.

It might be said that Butch represents the little things in life that are always there but are taken for granted by some people.

On the official website, it says he was built out of many different things, a crane, diesel and lorry!
