| Catherine (D'ni: Kathehrin/', originally named Katran''' (pronounced /CATCH-run/)) is a Rivenese woman who became the wife of Atrus. Gehn, Writer of the Age of Riven, set up their guilds modelled on his flawed perception of the D'ni civilization. Katran was one his students of his "Guild of Writers", and showed the most promise (although Gehn believed, as Katran was not D'ni, she could never actually Write). Gehn decided to make Katran his wife, against her will. In the mean time, Atrus had also come to Riven in secret and was being taken care of by Katran's family. Atrus met Katran, calling her "Catherine" (he could not pronounce Katran correctly), and fell in love with her. Together they plotted to trap Gehn on Riven, and escape. Unknown to Atrus, Katran had met with Ti'ana, Gehn's mother, and she and Katran together wrote the Age of Myst Island, proving Katran could also Write Ages. In the final battle with Gehn, Katran, Ti'ana and Atrus escaped, leaving Gehn trapped. During the years after Katran, now calling herself Catherine, gave birth to Sirrus and Achenar. These sons later rebelled against their parents, and tricked Catherine into going to Riven, and trapping Atrus on K'veer, before accidentally trapping themselves. This set the stage for the games of Myst and Riven. Finally, Atrus with the help of the Stranger managed to rescue her. After these events the couple eventually moved to Chroma'Agana, and explored Ages in order to re-establish the D'ni civilisation. After their adventure with the meeting with the Terahnee, Catherine settled with Atrus in Tomahna, where she became the mother of Yeesha. Based on Atrus's opening letter in Myst V: End of Ages, Katran dies a supposedly untimely death between the events of Myst IV: Revelation and Myst V: End of Ages.
