Games - Celebi

Celebi (セレビィ Serebii in Japanese, also called Celebi in French and German) is a fictional character in the Pokémon
franchise. It is an extremely rare, time-traveling deity.

There are many different ideas of Celebi's name origin. It most likely has originated either from the words "celestial" and "being" or "celestial'" and "bee," since it appears to be a sprite with bee wings and antennae. The name could be modeled off celebrity, due to it being a largely wanted Pokémon, or celebration (caused by actually owning one). There may be some reference to celery also (due to Celebi being part Grass, a substance which is edible to many herbivorous animals), and celibacy due to it not having a gender. It may even come from Celerity which means quickly.

Biology

Celebi apparently engages in the amazing act of time travel. Grass and trees flourish in the forests in which it has appeared. When it disappears deep in a forest, it is said to leave behind an egg it brought from the future. This Pokémon
came from the future by crossing over time. It is thought that so long as Celebi appears, a bright and shining future awaits us.

In the video games

Celebi is the Gold, Silver & Crystal counterpart to the Red, Blue, Green, & Yellow's Mew
, Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald's Jirachi
, and FireRed and LeafGreen's Deoxys
. Meaning, it can only be found as a promotional Pokemon in the second generation of games.

Celebi is not available in any English version of the Pokémon
game. Like Mew
, one would have obtained it by a Nintendo
giveaway event or by using GameShark
. However, it is available in the Japanese bonus disc for Pokémon Colosseum, as Jirachi
is available on the American version. Another way to get it is by using a BrainBoy on Gold, Silver, and Crystal, by changing one of your party Pokémon to Celebi. Rumors say that in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, you can find a wild one on Route 123, though it has been proven wrong because this trick is not programmed in the game's coding.

Obtaining Celebi

In the Japanese version of Pokémon Crystal, Celebi can be caught by obtaining the GS Ball (the same one that Ash
had to carry around while in the Orange Islands). However, this requires a cable to connect the Game Boy Color
with a cell phone.

This is not possible in the English version; when you use the change item code and enter the hexidecimal value for GS Ball, your item changes into the useless "Teru-Samu". This also happens for hexidecimal values above those programmed into the game.

Through either method, the player shows the GS Ball to Kurt the Pokéball Expert; he is astonished, and will ask you to take it as a gift of sorts to the Ilex Forest shrine, where the forest's protector, Celebi, is honored. After placing the GS Ball there, Celebi will appear and attack.

As with all mission-centered Pokémon (such as Sudowoodo
and the red Gyarados
), you only get one shot at this; if you make it faint your chance is gone forever, you will never be able to catch it again. If you save before fighting Celebi, you still have a chance if it faints. Turn off your Game Boy and try again.

Also, you can go to the Pokemon Center located in New York City, New York. There is a machine there that gives away rare Pokemon, which include Mew and Celebi.

Recently, Pokemon.com announced that Celebi will be available for download, along with several other Pokemon, for the Game Boy Advance Pokemon games at the Pokemon Journey Across America tour, a series of Regional Pokemon Game Boy Game competitions.

Pokémon Colosseum

In Pokémon Colosseum, the power of Celebi purifies Shadow Pokémon. When using one of the three Time Flutes, Celebi will appear and purify a Shadow Pokémon without the usual purification process. This is no doubt an allusion to its own experiences as a Shadow Pokémon in Pokémon 4Ever: The Voice of the Forest. In the Japanese version, Celebi can be caught with the bonus disc after purifying every Pokémon. However, the American bonus disc had Jirachi
in place of Celebi.
