Central Station is the main portal for PAL regions where people can view new game releases, change account details and enter online events for the PlayStation 2. It is only accessible from a PlayStation 2 system and a connection to the Internet is required using the network adapter either sold separate or built-in the console. New users can sign up in order to activate the service and to continue online play for PlayStation 2 games displaying the "With Net Play" logo. By registering a handle it can also be used on the Network Gaming Service web site. If a handle is registered on the PlayStation 2 it can also be used to register for online services on the PlayStation Portable.

Some games developed by Sony often require you to use the handle registered for Central Station to get into the online game but games developers are free to implement their own handle system. For example, Electronic Arts uses its own handle and password service for their range of games on the console.

The service since changed to a new look when the new slim model of the PlayStation 2 came out which is more quicker and lighter. Unfortunately, a USB mouse couldn't be used unlike on the older service. The service can also be left in the same state for many months with lack of news and new games information.
