| In the fictional Warhammer 40,000 universe, the Dark Age of Technology is the name given to the period of human history that begins sometime after present day and ends in the 25th millennium. The earliest possible beginning is the colonization of Mars and the discovery of the Noctus Labirynthis. The Dark Age of Technology is characterized by the STC system. Ever since the end of the Dark Age of Technology, the Adeptus Mechanicus, original caretakers of the STC systems, have been trying to find a functional one and are willing to go to any lengths to find even the smallest printout from an STC. Everything ever designed by an STC is better than the 41st millennium Imperium has the capacity to replicate without a printout, with the possible exception of the Golden Throne. As mentioned in the STC page, the STC systems may have been given to humanity by The Dragon. Most histories of humanity describe the Dark Age of Technology as being a time when humanity sold their souls for the advancement of technology. This fits with descriptions of sacrifices to the C'tan. If this is true, it means that the Adeptus Mechanicus were created by The Dragon as a way to prevent technological advancement like that of the Tau. During this time, the war between the Old Ones and the Necrontyr was reaching its final stages. The Old Ones, desperate for an advantage against the Necrontyr and their C'tan masters, began to engineer psychic races such as the Eldar, Orks, Jokaero, and possibly Hrud and Humanity. Whatever these races actually were, their existence created Chaos Gods Tzeentch, Khorne, and Nurgle and in doing so began the Age of Strife, making warp travel impossible and ending human exploration and colonization until The Emperor's Great Crusade. For Humanity, the beginning of the Age of Strife meant the beginning of the hibernation of The Dragon and the loss of all STC systems.
