DragonQuest is a fantasy role-playing game originally published by Simulations Publications (SPI) in 1980. Where first generation fantasy role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons restricted players to particular character classes, DragonQuest was one of the first games to utilize a system that emphasized skills, allowing more individual customization and a wider range of options.

DragonQuest appeared in four editions: first edition and second edition, a revised second edition in conjunction with Bantam Books, and a third edition published by TSR when they acquired SPI. As of 2006, it belongs to Wizards of the Coast through acquisition of TSR.

Subsequent role-playing games that were strongly influenced by DragonQuest include Steve Jackson Games' GURPS and HârnMaster.

The DragonQuest trademark prevented the Dragon Quest video game series from being published in North America under that title. In 2003, Square Enix registered the Dragon Quest trademark in the US. This trademark abandonment by Wizards of the Coast indicates that they have no interest in future DragonQuest publications.

Most DragonQuest players consider the revised second edition to be the best edition of the game.

"Arena of Death"

* Description: "Arena of Death" is a game about gladiatorial combat in an arena. It features the combat system from DragonQuest (1st Edition) with additional rules specific to the game. It is not officially a DragonQuest product.

"Frontiers of Alusia: Adventure Map"
* Source: SPI. (1981), SPI #337P11
* Description: Booklet describing a campaign setting, including maps and a brief gazetteer.

"GM's Screen" (1st Edition)
* Source: SPI. (1980), SPI #331P11
* Description: 4 panel 8-1/2" x 11" folded screen having the same picture as the 2nd Edition. It consists of four panels printed front and back (six sides have game material on them).

"GM's Screen" (2nd Edition)
* Source: SPI., SPI #3310
* Description: Essentially the same as the 1st Edition, with some minor adjustments to weapon Base Chances, and some items deleted. It has the words "2nd Edition Compatible" on the front cover.

"Heroes and Villains"

* Description: A 46 page booklet of characters keyed to the Frontiers of Alusia map. It includes a Great Eagle Shape Changer, an inn called the Fiddle in the Hand Inn, and some interesting magic items.

"Thieves' World"

* Description: A boxed set including 3 booklets and maps. It is based on Robert L. Asprin's city of Sanctuary and the Thieves' World series of books. The "Personalities of Sanctuary" booklet (pp. 24-30), has a set of guidelines for using Thieves' World characters with DragonQuest. Interesting features include: A discussion about how to handle gods, two new monsters, rules for Adepts using more than one College of Magic, and mention of the contents of Arcane Wisdom. A good source of NPC's.

"The Blade of Allectus"

* Description: A mysterious island where dwell a great mage and his lovely daughter. Somewhere on the island is also the rightful master of a far-off duchy, held by the mages against his will. The characters' mission is to rescue the duke and capture the mage and his daughter. (DragonNotes #6)
