Dragonite (カイリュー Kairyu in Japan, Dragoran in Germany and Dracolosse in France) is a fictional dragon Pokémon, from the Pokémon franchise. Dragonite is considered the "Kantonist" version of Salamence.

Its name is an extension of the word "dragon". Its Japanese name, Kairyu, literally means "Sea Dragon" (kai=sea, ryu=dragon).

Biology

Dragonite is diurnal, marine, and an omnivore. It flies at speeds reaching 800 km/h (~500 mph), despite the fact that its wings are insufficent to support such speeds. Some fans believe that it may have organs that are similar to a second pair of lungs filled with a gaseous matter similar to helium to allow it to "float", which may be the case for some other Pokemon. It has also been suggested that its bones are hollow.

Its behavior is inspired by both the mythical dragon (in that it can fly, breath fire, and lays eggs), and by real-world dolphins (in that it uses echolocation and has near-human intelligence). Also, like the dolphin, it has been noted to save drowning swimmers and threatened sailors. It even has the ability to release electric charges from its antennae. How it does so is unknown, but it may be because the fur on its antennae allow a powerful static charge to build. Dragonite is very loyal to any trainer it finds worthy of acceptance.

In the video games

This Pokémon cannot be caught in the wild in any game. The common way to get it is to evolve it from Dragonair, the evolved form of Dratini.

In Pokémon Red and Blue and Pokémon Yellow, Dragonite had the highest Attack of any pokémon in the games, even higher than the coveted Mewtwo and Mew. Even after those games, it was still a fearsome foe, with its Attack score in the 98th percentile, both Special Attack and Special Defense in the top 20% of all Pokémon, and no ability below the 69th percentile.

Dragonite has the ability Inner Focus. This prevents it from flinching from any attack (save the ability Focus Punch, which is an exception to normal flinching rules).

Dragonite is a dual typed Pokémon, being both Dragon and Flying type. This combination gives it a double weakness to Ice type moves, as well as weakness to Rock and Dragon type moves. However, this combination is quite powerful, causing it to possess a resistance to Fire, Water, Fighting, and Bug moves, as well as a double resistance to Grass, and an immunity to Ground.

Dragonite learns few level-up moves. In fact, it learns only one in Pokémon Red and Blue and Pokémon Yellow (Hyper Beam, a Normal-type energy attack), and only two were added in Pokémon Gold and Silver and Pokémon Crystal (Wing Attack, a Flying-type physical attack, and Outrage, a Dragon-type physical attack). It is assumed that most of Dragonite's moves will be learned while it is a Dratini or Dragonair, or via TM or HM.

In Pokémon GSC, Dragonite is a highly underrated Pokémon which isn't used much in battle. But he can be extremely useful if used in the hands of a PokéMaster. With Haze, Horn Drill, Reflect and Rest, Dragonite can easily stop the deadly Curseroarers (Pokémon that knows Curse and Roar/Whirlwind at the same time), which can't be stopped by pseudo-hazers (Pokémon that knows Roar or Whirlwind). It also knows Horn Drill, which can turn the tides of the battle if you're lucky.

This Dragonite moveset was created by Dark Dragon Master, the greatest PokéMaster at GSC. Another great Dragonite moveset created by him is Hidden Power , Horn Drill, Rest and Thunder Wave. This Dragonite can paralyze other Pokémon, discouraging them from attacking, use Hidden Power for Tentacruels with Substitute and Gengars, and Horn Drill for OHKOs.
