Games - Dusclops

The fictional Pokémon
Dusclops (サマヨール Samayouru in Japanese, Teraclope in French, Zwirrklop in German) is a Pokémon from the advanced generation (Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire) of Pokémon games. It is Pokémon #356 in the National Pokédex
.

Dusclops' name is derived from dusk, meaning night (and relating it to Duskull
) and Cyclops, a mythical Greek monster with a single eye.

Biology

Dusclops resembles 2 classic mythical/fictional monsters: the Cyclops and the Mummy. Dusclops has one eye, the most notable characteristic of the Cyclops. It's "skin" resembles the wrapping of cloth which the Mummy is covered in. The way Dusclops walks, with its hands outstretched (as though it were trying to grab a victim) and its feet stomping is also reminiscent of both the Cyclops and the Mummy.

Dusclops is said to be like a black hole: it absorbs matter into its body, through its mouth, never releasing the matter. What happens to the absorbed matter is unknown; it is possible that the matter is turned into energy to be used by Dusclops, or that the matter is taken to another dimension. Other theories suggest that inside Dusclops' body is a spectral ball of fire, similar to that of a Will-o-Wisp attack. This theory cannot be proved or disproved. However, if this were true, it would likely be the source of energy for Dusclops' Will-o-Wisp attack.

Dusclops also possesses the gift of hypnosis; it can control other conscious beings. It sways the victim into hypnosis by waving its hands and gazing into the victim's eyes.

In the video games

Dusclops evolves from Duskull at level 37. Dusclops can also be obtained in the Sky Pillar in Pokémon Ruby only.

Dusclops has very high Defense and Special Defense stats, making it an ideal staller, annoyer or sponge. It has low Hit Points (HP), however, so HP EVs are advisable. It can learn Toxic and Mean Look, so some battle sets have both moves to stall the enemy to death. Rest (available through TM) or Pain Split (available from breeding) replenishes health while the enemy slowly poisons to death.

Strangely enough, with only 465 Base Stat Total, Dusclops is still very powerful. The Will-O-Wisp/Calm Mind/Rest/Psychic moveset uses Will-O-Wisp to counter physical attackers, Calm Mind to counter special attackers, Rest to recover health and Psychic to make use of the Special Attack boost from Calm Mind and destroy poison-type Hazers like Crobat and Weezing (though 30 base Speed might question this). Ice Beam can be used instead because it has 5 base power more than Psychic.

In the animé

Dusclops first appears in the episode The Disaster of Disguise. In this episode, a kid named Timmy, who goes by the alias "The Phantom Masked Coordinator," wears a Dusclops mask and battles trainers with a Dusclops of his own.

Timmy and his Dusclops appear once more in the next episode, Diguise Da Limit!. Dusclops is entered into a Pokémon Contest, battling Jessie of Team Rocket
and defeating her. Timmy and Dusclops make it into the finals, battling against May and her Skitty
. May and Skitty triumph in the end. It also briefly appeared in Jirachi Wish Maker.

In other properties

In the card game

Dusclops first appears in the EX: Sandstorm set of the Pokemon TCG
. This card has the potential to be very powerful; the Judgement attack can knock-out the Defending Pokémon if 2 coin-flips both return heads, and the attack Random Curse allows the user to put a total of 5 damage counters on all Defending Pokémon in any way that the user wishes, nullifying the effects of weakness and resistance. Dusclops also appears as an EX card in EX: Emerald.
