In Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, the Eclipse Cannon was a weapon of mass-destruction on Space Colony ARK, notably able to destroy entire planets and pierce stars. The Chaos Emeralds were the necessary energy source to activate its full power, as it needed large amounts of energy.

After Eggman released Shadow from Prison Island, the mysterious hedgehog told him to bring more Emeralds to the ARK. Shadow then revealed his plan: use the Eclipse Cannon to blow up the Earth within 24 hours. Accompanied with Rouge the Bat, they gathered six of the Chaos Emeralds, and used the cannon to blow up half of the moon, panicking the people of Earth. The cannon needed the last Emerald to unleash its full fury. Later, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy came to the ARK with TWO Emeralds, the real one and a fake Tails designed. Eggman, however, found out and stole the real one. When he put it in, the Earth seemed doomed. However, the cannon didn't fire. A program set up by Gerald Robotnik activated, sending the ARK towards Earth. Sonic and Knuckles dashed to the Cannon's Core with the Master Emerald, as it had the power to nuetralize the Chaos Emeralds. It wasn't that simple, though, because the Biolizard, released by the program, blocked there path. Shadow distracted it as Knuckles stopped the Chaos Emeralds. The Biolizard then used Chaos Control to disappear and fuse with the ARK, becoming the Finalhazard. Sonic and Shadow used the Emeralds to turn into Super Sonic and Super Shadow. They defeated the Finalhazard and used Chaos Control to teleport the ARK back to its original spot. Shadow fell, out of energy, and seemingly died, but one of Eggman's robots rescued him, unbeknownst to the others.

In Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow, alive, but with an erased memory, went to collect the Chaos Emeralds to bring his memory back. Black Doom, leader of the Black Arms, however, stole all 7 of them to bring the Black Comet to Earth so he could use the people as an energy source. After immobilizing Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Amy, Rouge, and Doctor Eggman, Doom fled, pursued by Shadow. Meanwhile, on the ARK, Vector, Espio, and Charmy activated a secret video from Professor Gerald, stating the truth about Shadow and the Eclipse Cannon. 50 years ago, Black Doom helped Gerald create Shadow if the professor would give him the Chaos Emeralds afterwards. After Shadow's creation, Gerald figured out what Doom planned to do with the Emeralds. So, he created the Eclipse Cannon, strong enough to destroy the Black Comet. He would have Shadow one day destroy it with the cannon, fueled by the Chaos Emeralds. After the video, Doom, filled with rage, transformed into Devil Doom. Shadow went Super and destroyed him. Shadow then used Chaos Control to warp the Black Comet in front of the ARK, then used the Eclipse Cannon to blow it up.
