| Elisabetha Cronqvist is a character in the videogame Castlevania. She was the wife of Dracula (then known as Mathias Cronqvist) in Castlevania. Her death ignited her husband's grief and caused him to defy God in order to gain eternal life and become the penultimate being of evil: Dracula. Lament of InnocenceBeing the beloved wife of Mathias Cronqvist, he sought Elisabetha after the end of every campaign, which due to his strategic skills and the warrior prowess of Leon Belmont, was always successful. However, one day, Mathias returned home from a campaign to find Elisabetha had died due to an illness. Mathias was so consumed with grief about her death, that be himself became bedridden and was unable to aid the company in their efforts. One day, however, Mathias was able to struggle from his bed and tell Leon that his betrothed, Sara Trantoul had been kidnapped by a mysterious force from the master of a castle in a Forest of Eternal Night. While Mathias sits ill over Elisabetha's death he comes to the conclusion that God took her away from him. To that end, he will defy God by defying his decree that life is limited - therefore he will accomplish alchemy's ultimate goal in gaining eternal life. However, he needed the Crimson Stone, one of the most powerful alchemical artifacts in existence that allowed one to claim the spiritual essense of a slain vampire. To accomplish this, he needed a vampire, Walter Bernhard, and someone powerful enough to slay him, Leon Belmont. Due to this, he orchestrated the entire events of Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, and shortly after Walter was defeated by Leon, he made his move. Enlisting the aid of Death, he had Death claim Walter's soul and transfer it to him, the wielder of the Crimson Stone. Therefore Mathias claimed what he wanted: eternal life in full defiance of God. In so doing, he believed he was carrying out Elisabetha's wishes. To this end, Elisabetha can be seen as the direct cause of Mathias' transformation into Dracula. Future ParallelsAt some point after Dracula had accepted his position, he became enamored of a human women: Lisa. She evidently looked very similar to Elisabetha, Dracula's former wife. Out of this union, a son was born - Adrian Fahrenheit Tepes, better known as Alucard. However, Lisa, being a healer, was executed as a witch due to the people's misconception of her healing abilities as a form of witchcraft. Dracula was furious and promised revenge upon all of humanity due to this crime.Another parallel to Elisabetha is Mina Hakuba, whose relationship with Soma Cruz, the one who inherited Dracula's powers. They are depicted as very close and in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Celia, one of the primary antagonists of the game, slays a false Mina, which does convince Soma. This causes Soma to fly into a rage and even go so far as to become the Dark Lord in order to gain revenge. Whether he does so depends upon if he has currently equipped a specific item, but nevertheless, the "death" of his loved one was enough to kindle his rage and even accept his evil nature for revenge, much like Mathias gained immortality as a method of defying God for taking Elisabetha from him.
