Games - Enemies of Pikmin

Enemies of Pikmin refer to creatures in the Pikmin series
which attack, eat, kill, or otherwise harm the games titular creatures, the Pikmin
. The creatures which attack Pikmin come in many different forms, and comprise many species. Some of these species are found in Pikmin, some in Pikmin 2, and some in both games in the series. In both games, many of the creatures are identified with Latin binomial nomenclature.

Blowhogs

These creatures exhibit a wide range of behaviors and attacks, and are found in many areas of both Pikmin games. Their main method of attack is to propel some sort of attack at their enemies, with the hope of turning back Pikmin armies. Blowhogs do not eat Pikmin.

Fiery Blowhog

The Fiery Blowhog, Sus draconus, is found in many areas in both Pikmin games. It attacks by projecting fire from its snout, which is dangerous to all types of Pikmin except for the red Pikmin, who are immune to fire. The Fiery Blowhog is often found in groups. When attacked, it will buck its head, throwing Pikmin to its front so it can spray them with fire from its snout. It also will throw Pikmin into water to drown them.

Puffy Blowhog

The Puffy Blowhog, Sus inflata, is a Blowhog which floats above the ground, using its lungs to change its altitude, much like a fish using its swim bladder to regulate its swimming depth. The Puffy Blowhog's attack method its to blow a strong gust of wind from its lungs at Pikmin, dispersing their armies. Puffy Blowhogs do not attack Pikmin unprovoked, and are found in both Pikmin games.

Watery Blowhog

The Watery Blowhog, Sus logins, is a variation of the Fiery Blowhog, except instead of fire, it sprays water from its snout. It is only found in the second Pikmin game, and is usually found in areas in or around water. It can often be found near Fiery Blowhogs, and the two species do not appear to compete directly with each other.

Withering Blowhog

The Withering Blowhog, Sus decrepetia, is a relative of the Puffy Blowhog. It too floats above the air, using air pressure in its lungs to regulate its altitude, but the gust it blows out is weaker. Instead of merely blowing a gust of air, the Withering Blowhog adds a natural herbicide to its gusts, which severly weaken Pikmin that are caught in its blast. It appears in the second Pikmin game only.

Breadbugs

The Bread bug family contains several species. The proper Breadbugs, as well as the dwarf Bulborbs. The dwarf Bulborbs are simply Breadbugs who have developed carnivorous tendencies, and which use coloration to mimic larger Bulborb species. Due to the similar coloration, dwarf Bulborbs and the biologically separate Bulborbs they mimic often share the same territory.

Breadbug

The Bread bug, Pansarus gluttonae, is the namesake member of the Breadbug family. Breadbugs live underground in holes they dig, only leaving to forage for food, which they drag back to their holes to eat. Breadbugs are not aggressive to other species, as few species are aggressive towards them, due to Breadbugs having a thick, hard shell that protects them from predators. They are only defeated when sucked into a Pikmin onion. They do not actually get 'sucked in' however. They are just too stubborn to let go of the food they are being dragging. When many Pikmin pull at the same time, they can overwhelm the Breadbug and drag the food, with the Breadbug still firmly attached, with them. When they reach the Onion, they are pulled up with the food and end up hitting their heads falling back to the ground, therefore hurting themselves, or in Pikmin 2, by throwing Pikmin at it in great numbers and obtaining perfect hits on their backs. This creature is found in both Pikmin games.

Dwarf Orange Bulborb

The Dwarf Orange Bulborb, Pansarus pseudooculus orangium, another member of the Breadbug family, and another Bulborb mimic, is a miniaturized version of the Orange Bulborb. It contains the exact same garish (to quote the Pikmin game) coloration pattern as the Grub-Dog species it imitates, with the major exception that they travel almost exclusively in groups, and can never be found asleep in the daytime, unlike the species they copy. Like the Orange Bulborb, they are only found in Pikmin 2.

Dwarf Red Bulborb

Not actually belonging to the Grub-Dog family, the Dwarf Red Bulborb, Pansarus pseudoculii russus, is a species all its own with no actual relation to the Red Bulborb. Although similar in physical appearance due to mimic, the Dwarf Red Bulborb belong in the Breadbug family. Unlike the Red Bulborb, Dwarf Red Bulborbs are not nocturnal and generally prefer the day to the night. These creatures will occasionally form groups and hunt for Pikmin and other smaller creatures to eat. In contrast to the Grub-Dogs, Dwarf Bulborbs in the Breadbug family are much more alert and will attack if they sense the presence of Pikmin. However, since their mouths are much smaller they are usually much less dangerous, at most devouring two Pikmin at a time, whereas the true Bulborbs of the Grub-Dog family can ingest up to six at one turn. This species appears in both Pikmin games, although is more common in the first game.
