Games - Evangelion

In the anime/manga series Neon Genesis Evangelion
, Evangelions, or simply Evas, are the mechas piloted by Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami
, Asuka Langley Soryu
, and the other children. They are not simply mechanical giant robots, but are biomechanical and cybernetic with many biological components co-existing with a substantial mechanical infrastructure. Their flesh is rarely seen, however, since they are covered in flexible polymer sheeting, armor plating, and restraints. They are humanoid figures several stories in height, with fearsome, beast-like masks. The Evas were created by NERV for the apparent purpose of defending Tokyo-3.

The height of the Evangelion units, as shown in the first 24 episodes of the anime, is about 40-60 meters. This can be seen by large numbers of clues: size of hands compared to people, footprint size of Sachiel, relative sizes for entry plugs, and comparisons to buildings, weapons, and vehicles, including destroyers and helicopters. In some scenes they may appear larger for dramatic effect. In addition to their size, they are capable of superhuman movement, able to easily leap their own height and jump hundreds of meters from one destroyer to another. To power their massive frames through these actions, they utilize batteries, a power cord, or (later) an S² engine (for Unit 01 and the Mass Production units). Their power requirements plausibly run as high as 200 Megawatts - the engine output capacity of an aircraft carrier. Their batteries carry only a minute's charge at full use, five minutes at low power, or sixteen hours of life support. Auxiliary batteries can be attached to extend a unit's unplugged endurance.

They are intended to be controlled by direct nerve impulses from the pilot through a device called the A10 nerve clip. The pilots also receive feedback, even experiencing the pain of damage inflicted on the Evangelion. This pain is correlated with their "sync" ratio in the Evangelion. Despite the usual fine control provided by direct nerve impulses, there are also many instances in the series of Evas going "berserk" - Unit 01 in particular. In this state, the EVA will usually revert to its feral nature and tear apart the victim, during which the power requirements are usually ignored and capabilities have surpassed those of the pilot.

The Evangelions are named in the format of "Unit n" starting from Unit 00 in ascending order, as translated by ADV Films, and which is used in this article. However, the English format used in the original Japanese version is "EVA n", which is the format alternatively used by some fans. Other variations also exist, for example, "Unit-n", "EVA-n", "Eva-n", etc. In the Japanese dialogue, they are refered to as 'Zerogouki', 'Shogouki' and so on, which basically means 'Unit 0' etc.

Later in the series it is revealed that the Evas are actually derived from the first two Angels
, Adam and Lilith, and that the purpose of their armor is mostly to constrain and control their movements. Also, at least Units 00, 01, and 02 supposedly contain human souls that were trapped in those particular Evas by accident. Near the end of the series, it is revealed that the Dummy Plugs used to autopilot the Evas are actually made of either Rei Ayanami or Kaworu Nagisa
"personalities," and possibly actual clones.

Prototype/Test type Evangelion Units

Evangelions pre-Unit 00

Several prototype Eva models were made, all of which were deemed failures. These can be seen in the Evangelion graveyard. They all have orange armor. At least the first Evangelion prototype had five eyes. Most of these Evangelions' organic structures have rotted, and are little more than an armoured head connected to a backbone, often with an incomplete number of limbs. They have the word "reject" painted on their heads in large red letters.

Simulation bodies

Three incomplete Evangelion units are kept in the Pribnow Box in NERV headquarters. They are unarmored, have no legs, and have numerous cables exiting the neck instead of actual heads. These units are later infected by Iruel, the eleventh Angel. They may have been salvaged from earlier rejects, but they only appear in one episode and details of their construction are unknown.

Evangelion Unit 00 (Zerogouki)

Unit 00 is the Prototype, the first successful attempt at creating an Eva Unit, and is piloted by the first child, Rei Ayanami
.
