Evgeny Bareev (b. 21 November 1966) is a Russian chess Grandmaster. In the Enghien-les-bains tournament held in France in 2003, Bareev finished in first place. He once reached the #3 position in the world, behind Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov, and as recently as October 2003, was in fourth place in the world rankings, with an ELO rating of 2739. In a man vs. machine contest in January 2003, Bareev took on the chess program HIARCS in a four game match. All four games were drawn. Bareev biggest success in career was winning a supertournament in Wijk aan Zee 2002, also known as Corus. In this event he scored 9/13 ahead of elite players like Grischuk, Adams, Morozevich, and Leko. He was also a second to world champion Vladimir Kramnik in his triumphant match against Garry Kasparov in 2000. Bareev was member for the Russian national team playing on two Chess Olympiads in 1994 and 1996.

On the January 2006 FIDE list, he was number twenty in the world, and had an ELO rating of 2698. Bareev most notable participation on the world championship events was in Dortmund 2002, eventually losing in the semifinal match to Veselin Topalov, current FIDE world champion. Bareev was also a world champion for the boys under 16 in 1982 when his talent was first showcased internationally.
