| The FIDE World Chess Championship 2005 took place in San Luis Province in Argentina from September 27 to October 16 2005.
It was a chess tournament among eight players. The final standings are: #Veselin Topalov 10.0 #Viswanathan Anand 8.5 #Peter Svidler 8.5 #Alexander Morozevich 7.0 #Péter Lékó 6.5 #Rustam Kasimdzhanov 5.5 #Michael Adams 5.5 #Judit Polgár 4.5 Topalov scored an extraordinary 6.5/7 in the first cycle, one of the greatest streaks in the history of chess. He then drew every one of his games in the second cycle, winning the event with one round to spare. FIDE (the International Chess Federation) declared before the tournament that they would regard whoever won as World Chess Champion. However, Topalov will not be the undisputed champion, as many consider Vladimir Kramnik to be the World Chess Champion after his convincing victory over Garry Kasparov in 2000. He was invited to take part in this tournament, but declined. Although Topalov has indicated he does not intend to face Kramnik in a title reunification match, Kramnik has declared he is in favour of this occurring. It was a double round robin event, where every player plays every other player twice, once with each colour. It used normal (slow) time controls, unlike the Knock-Out FIDE World Chess Championship tournaments held since 1998 which were criticised for using fast time controls. The opening ceremony took place on September 27, the matches started on September 28, and the closing ceremony took place on October 16. Kasimdzhanov was the defending FIDE champion, having placed first at Tripoli and Malta, 2004, and Polgár was the first woman to compete for the world chess championship.
