Games - Gainax ending

A Gainax ending is an ending to a television show, usually an anime, that is characterized by being very different in tone from the majority of the series, generally in a darker way. A Gainax ending often frustrates fans, especially if they were expecting a certain type of resolution to the series.

Origin of the Term

The term is named after Gainax, which has a reputation for, among other things, ending its shows in a way that is a big switch from the mood of the rest of the series. The most famous show to have a Gainax ending, and the one that most likely spawned the term, was Neon Genesis Evangelion
. Though Gainax shows frequently end in such a manner, a show doesn't necessarily have to be produced by Gainax to have a Gainax ending.

  • Dinosaurs
  • Teen Titans (possibly intentional; the show's creators are known fans of Gainax's work FLCL
, which they reference many times throughout the series, and they reference other Gainax shows in the series finale as well (specifically Neon Genesis Evangelion and Kare Kano
    .)
