Galactic Federation can refer to two different fictional organizations.

Galactic Federation in the Metroid series

Galactic Federation is a fictional organization in the Metroid
video game series.

A mysterious "future United Nations" for the universe, its home planet is Earth. Little is mentioned about it in the series although it plays a major part in the plot. Many missions start on account of lost/missing GF Troopers, experiments gone terribly wrong or fantastically right, directives and contract agreements etc. Their armour technology is less advanced than Samus Aran's Chozo Power Suit but they did save Samus on occasion and provide her with contracts. The Federation consists of a number of alien races and sometimes starts disasters, such as when they unwittingly created the SA-X and later tried to capture the SA-X and the X Parasites in Metroid Fusion.

Technology

The projectiles fired by a Galactic Federation Trooper seem to be surrounded in energy of some sort - it is possible they have found a way to surround the projectiles with a damaging ion field or something similar, like many early-futuristic-technology orginizations in science fiction.

GF Marines appear to wear powered armour, though it is not as effective as Samus's Chozo battlesuit. Their primary weapon is a rapid-fire assault rifle or machine gun which appears more powerful than Samus's own Power Beam when fired rapidly (it kills Ing (video game species)-posessed Splinters in single hits rather than many).
