Gareth is a character in the Mega Man X series. History
Gareth was one of two "Soul Erasers", and challenged X and Zero when they first arrived on Laguz Island. He claimed he only erased the souls of "evil" Reploids, which angered X and Zero and spurred them to fight. Stubborn to fight instantly, he said he would only challenge them if they were to defeat the eight guardians of the island. X and Zero reluctantly agreed. As they battled Gareth noted to Berkana, his partner, that they were extremely powerful and should be wiped out immediately. Berkana, however, was greedy and overzealous, and allowed them to continue in their pursuit. This led to the fall of the two Soul Erasers, and Gareth was defeated at the hands of Zero. After this, Sigma revealed himself as the man behind the plot. Personality
Gareth, while a villain, truly seemed to believe in the respectability of his mission. He was probably sincere in his belief that he was only erasing evil Reploids, and he chose not to battle X and Zero until they proved themselves. He was also a protective knight, though, in that he wanted to defend Berkana from X and Zero upon seeing their power. He was on somewhat equal footing with Berkana, but seemed to be in a position of self-appointed servitude to her and therefore followed what she said. This trust is what led to his death.
