Games - Gau

Gau is a fictional character of the Square Co., Ltd.'s computer role-playing game Final Fantasy VI. He is a feral child who lives among the animals on the Veldt.

"Draped in monster hides, eyes shining with intelligence. A youth surviving against all odds..."

Gau is the son of the "aged man" who lives in the house near where Sabin
ends up after falling in Lete River. Gau's mother died in childbirth and his father, believing him to be a "demon child," abandoned the then infant Gau in the Veldt.

Gau is first encountered by Sabin and Cyan
after washing up onto the Veldt after a plunge from Baron Falls during their trek to Narshe. After being randomly encountered, Gau joins the party when he is fed the Dried Meat from the item shop at Mobliz. He guides the player to an underwater helmet which can be used to breathe while riding the currents in the underwater Serpent Trench to Nikeah. In the World of Ruin
he can once again be found on the Veldt, but only if the player brings three or fewer characters there to obtain him.

If the player visit the house of the aged man in the World of Ruin with Gau in the party, the aformentioned origin of Gau is explained, including the fact that the man doesn't recognize his son and believes Gau's birth to have been a nightmare. Ignoring Sabin's attempts to convince him it wasn't a dream, the man tells Gau he's a fine young man, and that his true parents would be proud. When Sabin attempts to comfort Gau afterwards, Gau tells him that he is happy to have seen his father, even if he doesn't remember him.

Gau was born on April 5th, making him an Aries.

Leap and Rages

Gau is one of the most powerful player characters in the game thanks in part to his Rages. When he encounters monsters on the Veldt, he can use Leap to jump out of the party into the monster formation and end the battle. The next time he is encountered on the Veldt, he will rejoin the party with the ability to use those monsters' rages. When he uses a monster's rage, he will use either a regular fight, or a special attack every turn automatically, until the battle ends or he is KO'd and then revived, and will also adopt certain statistics of the monster he's performing his Rage on, which basically makes Gau a modified and enhanced Berserker. Gau's level will not be averaged with everyone else's to determine the new character's level as is done with other characters.

Quotes

  • Playing around with Cyan
's speech, shortly before applying it to the wrong person
    : "Thou! Thou!"
  • Introducing himself to the rest of the team: "Gau...GAU!"
Strangely, changing Gau's name to anything else won't change the part in capitals, making it a rather odd phrase in English - it makes more sense if you know that "gau" is a Japanese onomatopoeia used in the same way that English uses the word "roar".

Music

In Final Fantasy VI Original Sound Version, Gau's theme is called "Gau" -- disc 1, track 18 . His leitmotif is also found in the track:
  • Ending Theme -- 3, 15
  • *Gau's theme is also featured in the Final Fantasy VI arranged album Final Fantasy VI Grand Finale in the track "Gau" .
