Hammer is a member of the United States Military and was sent to the Hakuba Shrine to investigate events that are taking place there. During the events of Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow, Hammer serves as the shopkeeper for Soma Cruz, selling him powerful items as well as healing potions and the like. In Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow he has the same role.

Aria of Sorrow

After defeating the Great Armor boss in the Library area, Soma moves to the room to the left, and encounters a tall, muscular man who calls himself Hammer. He reveals that he works for the military, and was sent to the Hakuba shrine on mysterious circumstances, and ended up in this castle. He states that his he has been thinking about quitting the army and opening up a shop. After this talk, when the player goes to the locked castle gate Hammer has his shop fully established. He sells a variety of weapons, armor, accesories, and items. He also sells you portions of the castle's map, allowing Soma to discover new areas. The first time Soma converses with Mina with Hammer at the entrance, she is worried about him, and fears him. After reassurance from Soma, she says she will believe Soma and trust the man. The first time the player talks to Hammer, he confronts Soma about Mina, and mistakenly takes her for his girlfriend, leading to much embarrassment on Soma's behalf. As the player moves along in the game, his selection of things to buy increases, and eventually he can sell you some of the most powerful objects in the game. Also, the player can sell weapons, armor, accessories, and items, excluding Castle Map pieces, to Hammer, to earn more Gold for purchasing new objects.

Dawn of Sorrow

Hammer is met by Soma in Dawn of Sorrow shortly after the game's opening events and he encounters Soma near the entrance to the castle. He apparently has left the U.S. Military and is acting as an independent merchant. To Soma, he claims he will set up a shop, and Soma later finds him in The Lost Village, where his shop has been fully established. Ironically, this shop is directly across from Yoko Belnades, with whom Hammer has a love interest in (Yoko does not return this sentiment). Hammer is a little different than he was in Aria of Sorrow. He is obsessed with Yoko, and his new theme song reflects this, showing a transition from the rock guitar song that played in Aria of Sorrow. Hammer is insecure if Julius or Genya Arikado have any interest in her. He remains in the shop for the remainder of the game, with amusing lines about Soma's relationship with Mina, and his "relationship" with Yoko.

At the end of the game, following Soma's defeat of the game's final boss, Hammer stands with the rest of the characters, laughing at a blushing Soma and Mina.
