Hengband is a variant of the popular roguelike game Angband, and is primarily based on the popular Angband variant ZAngband. It was originally a Japanese variant, today having both Japanese and English versions. Development on Hengband as of Autumn 2005 has ceased.

Hengband contains many varied and unique features that set it apart from the multitude of other Angband variants. Some of the most important are:

More numerous and more diverse character classes
, including the stealthy Ninja, Weaponsmiths, the Red Mage
(which can major in two schools of magic) and the Blue Mage
(both of which are strongly reminiscent and share the same roles as their counterparts in the Final Fantasy
series of role-playing games). There is also an inclusion of the challenging Tourist class, presumedly inspired by the NetHack
character class of the same name.

A wilderness system similar to that of 2.2.8/2.4.0 ZAngband.

Statistics gain when a character levels up.

An arena in which you can fight against powerful monsters and uniques for prizes.

New towns, cities and dungeons, including the dungoeons of Heaven and Hell (in which Level 666 can be reached - unusual since in Angband dungeons deeper than level 100 are rare)

An on-screen menu offering shortcuts to user actions and status screens. This is helpful to the beginner since traditional roguelikes depend on the user knowing a large list of keyboard commands.

Hengband is a popular variant and has a large number of players. It has however been criticised as being too easy; the formation of the new variant Entroband addresses this.
