Hollow Bastion is a castle in the Kingdom Hearts series; located in the world Radiant Garden which is the home of the characters from the Final Fantasy
series and to Ansem. The world was at first destroyed as a result of Xehanort's obsession with learning the secrets of the universe. However, only the castle remained, despite being decayed by the shroud of darkness covering it, and came under the rule of Maleficent, who learned that the Final Keyhole, which would lead to Kingdom Hearts, could be opened by collecting the seven Princesses of Heart (one of whom was the princess Aurora from the world Maleficent herself came from).

History

Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories

During the first half of Kingdom Hearts, Sora feels a familarity to Hollow Bastion as the result of the influence of Kairi's heart. It would turn out that Kairi was originally from Hollow Bastion, but was sent to the Destiny Islands by Xehanort to confirm the theory that a Princess of Heart could find the Keyblade Master.

Hollow Bastion is revealed to be the world where several of the Final Fantasy characters in Traverse Town, along with Cloud Strife in the Olympus Coliseum, came from. The Beast and Belle from Beauty and the Beast appear here.

In Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Sora and Riku wandered in facsimiles of Hollow Bastion based on their memories.

Kingdom Hearts II

The Hollow Bastion plays a greater role in Kingdom Hearts II than it had in the previous games. Hollow Bastion is revealed to be the name of the only standing castle after the world's destruction; the world's true name is revealed to be Radiant Garden. Before it became shrouded in darkness, the world had been peaceful and was ruled by Ansem the Wise.

In Kingdom Hearts II, it functions like Traverse Town in the first game. This time around in the world, Squall Leonhart (Leon), Cid Highwind, Yuffie Kisaragi, Merlin and others are attempting to rebuild the town. When Sora and company arrive, they are asked by Cid to help in the redevelopment.

There is a computer in the world also that contains the world of "Space Paranoids"; the computer realm of Tron. In the middle of the game, the world will come under attack by the Organization XIII, which results in one of the most dramatic scenes in the game and a massive battle with an army of Heartless (known as the War Sequence).

Cloud's side story involving light and dark takes place in Radiant Garden and leads to a climatic fight against Sephiroth, with help from Tifa Lockhart, Sora, Donald, and Goofy.
