Games - Hong Kong Olympiad in Informatics

Hong Kong Olympiad in Informatics (HKOI; 香港電腦奧林匹克競賽) is an annual programming competition for secondary students in Hong Kong, emphasizing on problem solving techniques and programming skills. It is co-organized by the Hong Kong Association of Computer Education (HKACE), Hong Kong Education and Manpower Bureau, Hong Kong Computer Society and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. It serves as a preliminary contest to international, national and regional competitions such as the National Olympiad in Informatics
(NOI) and the International Olympiad in Informatics
(IOI).

The competition is divided into two groups, the Junior Group consists of students aged 17 or below, and the Senior Group consists of students aged 19 or below. There is a heat event which consists of a written paper, and outstanding students proceed to enter the final event, which consists of usually 4 to 5 programming tasks to be solved within 3 hours.

Prizes are awarded in Gold, Silver and Bronze, in the ratio of approximately 1:2:3. Winners are then invited to join the HKOI Training Team for intensive training. At around June or July, a Team Formation Test will be held to select delegates for IOI and NOI.

History

Hong Kong first participated in IOI in 1992, NOI in 1995 (as observer team), SEARCC in 1993 and SCY in 1994. By 1995, selection tests were separately administered for these four competitions. Then in 1996, HKACE, HKCS and ED joined together for the Joint Selection Contest. This contest was renamed as the first HKOI in 1997. After SCY ended in 1996, Hong Kong hosted NOI in 1997 to celebrate its return to Chinese sovereignty. Hong Kong started to send teams to AGAMES in 2004.
