Hostile Intent (HI) is a mod for the popular first-person shooter (FPS) computer game Half-Life. While Hostile Intent may seem like the average Counter-Strike
clone, it has many features and design decisions that add realism to the terrorist/counterterrorist FPS genre.

Typical game

A typical game starts with players entering the server and picking their team. They can choose to be a member of Nato or Tango forces. After choosing their team, player choose their weapons. They can choose one primary weapon, pistol, and 2 equipment items. For example, players can pick a fragmentation grenade for both slots and have 2 fragmentation grenades, or pick flash bangs for both slots to get 4 flash bangs, or any combination.

After choosing most of their equipment, players spawn into the game (provided that the round has just started or they are the first in the server.) As a Nato member, players are usually assaulting. Tangos are usually on defense. Players advance to their objective (either to defend it (T) or disarm/read/capture (N) it. Should player come into contact with the enemy, they'll need to right click to bring the iron sights up before they can fire (realism is important in this mod) as players cannot fire without sights. There are no crosshairs in this game. Players can fire from the standing, crouched, and prone positions, listed in order of least to greatest accuracy. Should they successfully neutralize the enemy, there's a key to report that fact over the radio, as death notifications have been removed. Also removed is the number of kills made from the scoreboard. HI is, first and foremost, a team game, and as such the only score is the team score. Hostile Intent plays slowly with emphasis on tactics, compared to fast-paced squad shooters like Counter-strike. Camping is encouraged as being highly tactical, especially when defending someone capturing an objective. Hit boxes are so-so, sometimes players have to fire a whole gun magazine to kill someone behind something flimsy as a curtain.

Community

Hostile Intent has a thriving and dedicated online community at its online forums and on GameSurge's IRC network. A lot of the community has been around since the beginning of the HI project, across 3 forum wipes, 2 server hosts, and about 4 years of stop-and-start development. The developers constantly post in the forums and request feedback and bug reports, if what they're working on isn't a secret.

Version 1.5 Open Beta was released on 21 November 2005, and is part of the HI Community Development (HI:CD). The team made it so that players can play b1.5 and 1.4 without any conflicts. One of the more interesting additions is a green triangle over a teammates head; this is highly criticized as taking away from the HI experience, and it is unclear if any future updates will have it in as a client-side or server-side option, or not at all. Also, hit detection in b1.5 seems to have been fixed up some. On January 14th 1.5 final was released. This version removed the criticized green triangles and had .

Future

Hostile Intent is currently planned to be recreated on the Source engine under the name Hostile Intent: Phoenix Rising.
