Illidan Stormrage is a major character in the fictional Warcraft Universe.

Imprisonment

Illidan Stormrage, brother of the Night Elf Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage
, has led a life of misery that has lasted over ten thousand years.

Born of the immortal Night Elves, Illidan was a prominent figure in the first war against the demons of the Burning Legion. Illidan and a group of Night Elves were the only ones to embrace the magic of the Well of Eternity outside of Queen Azshara and her elite Highborne priests. In their actions they caused a rift to grow between the Night Elves, primarily between Illidan and his brother Malfurion. The magic of the Well was destructive and caused immense amounts of devastation when wielded by the Highborne. However, the might of the Well turned against them, and in an immense cataclysm, the continent was torn asunder, stranding the Night Elves (many Highborne included) on the considerably smaller continent of Kalimdor. The non-Highborne Night Elves, at this point fully devout to the magic of nature through druidism, created the World Tree of Mt. Hyjal to sustain themselves. The Highborne left their druid brethren in disgust and traveled to the Eastern Continent of Lordaeron, where they became known as the High Elves. Illidan and his few remaining supporters were banished to underground prisons, fiercely guarded by the Wardens. To Illidan himself Maiev Shadowsong
was assigned as his personal jailor, and there he would remain for ten thousand years until circumstances would favor him.

Release

Shortly after the return of the Burning Legion, Priestess Tyrande
and Arch Druid Malfurion made a desperate journey down into the Barrow Deeps of the Druids of the Claw. These druids had been in hibernation, but had nestled very close to the prison of Illidan. In the depths of the Barrow Deeps, at the entrance to the prison Tyrande made a decision to free Illidan, and to let him face the Burning Legion with his powers. Malfurion opposed this, and the two went their separate ways. Tyrande and a small cadre of Night Elf Sentinels fought their way to the cell containing Illidan and set him free.

Upon returning to the surface, he led the Night Elves in destroying some of the dimensional gates, then disappeared. Illidan was soon led by Arthas to find a powerful demon artifact, the skull of Gul'dan, that the burning legion was using to corrupt and poison Felwood. Illidan destroyed the artifact, absorbing the power and some of the memories of Gul'dan. This transformed him into a demon-like form. He then hunted down and killed Tichondrius, lord of the Nathrezim. Seeing what he had become, Malfurion banished Illidan, who stormed off, leaving a burning trail in his wake.

Demon allegiance

After the defeat of the Burning Legion, Kil'jaeden approached Illidan, who agreed to serve the demon and destroy his rogue creation, the Lich King.

Intent on re-capturing Illidan, Maiev searched for him throughout the Ashenvale Forest. They found that now Illidan was neither Night Elf nor Demon, but something more. Illidan also recruited a group of Naga, Highborne Elves who, instead of making it to dry land as did the others, were trapped beneath the sea created by the Well of Eternity, and there were warped by their coveted magic into amphibious snake-like people.

With the help of the Naga, Illidan located the Tomb of Sargeras and found the Eye of Sargeras, an immensely powerful ancient artifact. At the command of the supreme Demon Lord Kil'jaeden, Illidan was directed to destroy the Frozen Throne and kill the Lich King. Illidan then traveled to the Eastern Kingdoms with his followers to cast a spell to destroy the Lich King. Just when the spell was about to be complete, his brother Malfurion intervened and all the efforts to kill the Lich King were foiled. Malfurion was unaware of Illidan's intentions, knowing only that the spell was damaging the world and determined to stop it.
