| John Higgins (born May 18 1975, Wishaw, North Lanarkshire) is a Scottish professional snooker player. Higgins turned professional in 1992. Still in his teens, he won three ranking tournaments in the 1994/95 season and reached the final of the Masters. The 1997/1998 season was a successful one as hee won the World Championship and two other ranking titles and reached the number one spot in the rankings. The following season he consolidated his position by winning the only other major titles - The UK and Masters and retained his number 1 position. For a while, Higgins was dominating snooker, as Stephen Hendry had done throughout the 1990s, but fierce competition from players, notably Mark Williams , saw him knocked off the top spot after only two seasons. Higgins once again reach the world final but was beaten by O'Sullivan. The start to the 2001/2002 season was to be a record breaking one as he won the first three titles, Regal Masters, Champions Cup and British Open. This unstoppable run came to an end as John's wife gave birth to his first son. Fatherhood had a big effect on John and he struggled with his concentration which left him trophyless for a few seasons. He no longer practices the way he did to become world champion and world number 1 in 5 seasons. John is thought to be one of the best match player ever but lacks the mental strength and self belief of players like Stephen Hendry or Mark Williams In late 2004, John's wife gave birth to his second son. He had a stronger 2004/2005 season, winning the British Open. In the final of the 2005 Grand Prix, Higgins became the first player to make four consecutive century breaks in a ranking tournament, scoring 103, 104, 138 and 128 against O'Sullivan. In the process, he scored a record 494 points without reply from his opponent. He also reached the final of the Malta Cup, and looks set to return to the top 4 of the rankings at the end of the 2005/2006 season. Higgins strength is his combination of superb break-building, technique and outstanding safety & tactical play. These skills have saw him become one of the top 5 most successful players in snooker history.
