Games - Kaela Mensha Khaine

Kaela Mensha Khaine is a god of the Eldar
in the Warhammer 40,000
fictional universe associated with battle, war and conflict. Many scholars believe him to be a manifestation of the Eldar's racial passion as manifested in battle and warfare. "Kaela Mensha" is not technically part of Khaine's name, but is a title he bears. It roughly translated to "bloody-handed", a reference to the blood which eternally drips from his hands as a reminder of his murder of the ancient Eldar hero, Eldanesh.

Khaine is one of the two surviving gods of the Eldar. In the old pantheon, he was second only to Asuryan himself in power, and was often shown as the enemy of Vaul. He is also the most violent and reckless of the gods. Asuryan was so appalled by his murder of Eldanesh, a mortal, that he cursed Khaine and made his hands drip eternally with the blood of Eldanesh so that everyone would remember what he had done.

Khaine is also believed to have been assaulted, defeated, and dominated by Slaanesh
, the newly-awakened Chaos god of pleasure and passion sometime after Slaanesh's awakening in the 29th millennium (Imperial
Calendar). Following this, Khorne the Blood God
, patron of war and murder, battled Slaanesh for Khaine, rightly claiming the Eldar deity as belonging (at least partially) to him. During their struggle, Khaine escaped and divided his spiritual essence into the bodies of many of the Eldar race, who in turn became his physical manifestations - the dread Avatars of Khaine - who go before the Eldar in times of war, wielding the might of the War God himself. It is believed that at the centre of each Craftworld rests the sleeping form of an Avatar of Kaela Mensha Khaine, and that in times of war they can awaken him to lead them into war.

Eldar Aspect Warriors are called to embody different aspects of Khaine through long training and conditioning, fulfilling different combat roles related to these aspects. The greatest Eldar warriors may, if the need arises, be called upon to become an Avatar of Khaine, one of the most powerful abilities/units the Eldar possess. The Avatars of Khaine are towering monsters with skin of iron and molten cores, hands permanently dripping with blood as Khaine's did.

Because the Avatar is technically considered a Daemonic entity by at least some of the games using the setting, it is most likely that Khaine is an entity of the Warp
. He does not appear to be as power-hungry and demonstrably evil as some others of this ilk (such as the Chaos Gods Slaanesh, Nurgle
, Tzeentch
and Khorne).

Warhammer Fantasy

Within the Warhammer Fantasy
universe (which some believe to be a subset of the Warhammer 40,000 universe), Khaine is worshiped by the Dark Elves, the Witch Elf Cults in particular. However, in this instance his full title is Khaela Mensha Khaine, with a 'h' that is not present in the Warhammer 40,000 Khaine. This is mainly used to differentiate the two deities. For example, Khaela is the god of murder, in contrast to Kaela, god of war. It is hinted that Khaine may actually be the Chaos God Khorne under a different name, a connection that is considered false in Warhammer 40,000.
