Games - Kimahri Ronso

Kimahri Ronso is a fictional character from Final Fantasy X of the Final Fantasy
video games. He is voiced by John DiMaggio in the English version, who does the voice of Wakka
as well.

A blue-furred, lion-like humanoid, Kimahri is a Ronso. He is Yuna's first and most faithful guardian having known and protected her since she was 7. However, he was not well accepted by the other Ronso, who view him as inferior due to his short stature (although he still towers over the non-Ronso characters) and his broken horn. His horn was broken in a duel with Biran and Yenke, two rowdy Ronso who occasionally bump into Kimahri during the journey to tease him and sometimes give harsh sounding yet useful advice. He is silent through the game because of his shame of being a small Ronso and having a broken horn.

The first time Kimahri talks, following Operation Mi'ihen, he reminds a shocked Tidus (who's surprised that Kimahri can talk at all) that he must keep a bright exterior and happy face to help brighten Yuna's dark journey. From then on he only talks when necessary and usually says something that helps Tidus or the group.

In Kimahri's class one can see echoes of the dragoons of older Final Fantasy games (weapon choice, a jump attack) and of Blue Mage classes
(the Lancet ability lets him learn enemy attacks). Kimrahi's Spirit Lance is his ultimate weapon, and it can be noted that spear or lance weapons have been a favored weapon of the Ronso for some time. In terms of gameplay, Kimahri is the only character lacking a pre-determined course on the Sphere Grid, allowing the player to choose his abilities and talents from the get-go.

Kimahri's guardianship began long before Yuna officially decided to become a summoner. Ten years before the game begins, while he still lived on Mount Gagazet, Kimahri fought Biran and lost, but refused to give up. Biran snapped Kimahri's horn in half in a moment of fury. Shamed for it, Kimahri left his home and near Bevelle stumbled across a dying Auron
, who managed to crawl all the way from the Zanarkand Ruins. Auron told Kimahri about the daughter of Braska, Yuna, and asked him if he could move Yuna from the metropolis of Bevelle to the island village of Besaid, to fufill a promise Auron made to Braska.

Kimahri gave Auron his word, and made sure that Yuna arrived at Besaid safely. When his task was completed, Yuna pleaded that Kimahri stay with her, and he complied. Kimahri's main character growth occurred when he finally confronted Biran and Yenke, in a seemingly impossible to beat 2-vs-1 match. He proves his worth as a Ronso when he defeated the two. Biran is joyed Kimahri beat them, hinting to his actions being a type of "tough love" throughout the years. During Final Fantasy X Kimahri is the first party member to be bluntly vocal about his dislike and suspicion of Seymour Guado
. Unfortunately for Kimahri, his quick intuition was correct, as Seymour killed most of the Ronso tribe, while he was following Yuna's group up Mt. Gagazet.

Two years after Yuna's Calm began, in Final Fantasy X-2, Kimahri became the new Elder of the Ronso tribe and informed Yuna of a possible Sphere in the ruins of the mountain. Kimahri is also having problems which he had to deal with. The first was with no more Summoners, Gagazet is rarely visited by outsiders and thereby threatened the Ronso way of life. Another was with a rebellious young Ronso named Garik, who wanted to seek vengeance upon the Guado for the grievances they caused to the Ronso two years prior under Seymour's command. Kimahri, however, wanted to make peace with the Guado and is hard-pressed to abate the young Ronsos' anger. To make things worse, he has to worry about two Ronso pups (children), Lian and Aide, who have run off in search of adventure and a way to fix Kimahri's broken horn. Kimahri couldn't search for them himself because as Elder he cannot leave Gagazet while dealing with Garik's urge for revenge and the fate of Ronso livelyhood.

Eventually (In the Episode Complete), after Lian and Aide return, Kimhari found the answer to his plight in what the children learned from their journeys. Once settling things wth Garik, Kimhari finally obtained peace among his people by having that all Ronso should follow the example of Lian and Aide by going out into the world. The Ronso eventally crafted a statue in Kimhari's image.

Trivia

  • Kimahri's celestial weapon, the Spirit Lance, was called Longinus in the Japanese version of the game, apparently from the Roman soldier Longinus (also known as Gaius Cassius, but surprisingly not related to Gaius Cassius Longinus) who pierced the side of Jesus on the cross in Christian mythology with the Spear of Destiny.
  • Kimahri provides the inspiration for the DotA: Allstars character Azwraith the Phantom Lancer.
