The King of All Cosmos is a fictional character from the video games Katamari Damacy and We ♥ Katamari. The King is a massive, god-like monarch who rules over the cosmos, including all the stars and planets in the sky. Although he grew up on or near Earth, he is constantly perplexed and surprised by the boundless limits of human creativity as expressed by the sheer number of "things" on Earth.

In Katamari Damacy, the King wakes up one day to find that he has accidentally destroyed all the stars in the cosmos after a night of drunken revelry. Wishing to repair the damage that this accident caused, he directed his son, the Prince, and his son's cousins, to roll up any and all objects on Earth, so that they could be turned into stars. We ♥ Katamari gives further insight into the life of the King of All Cosmos before this accident. During this game, the King of All Cosmos seeks to fulfill the desires of the fans on Earth that he gained during the events of Katamari Damacy, again through directing his son, the Prince, and his cousins to complete each task.

In August 2005, the King of All Cosmos was nominated for a G4 Gphoria award for Best Character, which was won by Kratos, the protagonist from God of War. In the same month, he was also featured in GameFAQs "Character Battle 4" Summer Contest, in which he lost to Tidus, the protagonist of Final Fantasy X.

Family

The current King of All Cosmos is the son of the Emperor of All Cosmos, though his mother is unknown. King of All Cosmos is married to the Queen of All Cosmos, who plays almost no role in the game, save for an appearance in the Royal Car in the opening movie of Katamari Damacy. She later reappears in We ♥ Katamari where the story of their meeting and courting is told. On the other hand, his son, the Prince, plays a very large role in the game, as he is the character whom the player actually controls. The King's relationship with his son is somewhat shaky; compliments towards him are rare and subtle when they appear, and the King is somewhat callous in giving his son Royal Presents. He offers the Prince little comfort if the Prince fails in a task, and is even known to have trouble recognizing him among his many, very different-looking cousins.

Theme Song

His theme song from the first game is Fugue #7777, which is track 5 on the soundtrack CD whereas in the sequel We ♥ Katamari his theme song is DAN DON FUGA. A Song for King of Kings also features the presumed voice of King of All Cosmos. In Boku No Watashi No Katamari Damacy his theme was also Fugue #7777, but for the English translation of the game, Me and My Katamari, he was given an as of yet untitled new song.

History

The King of All Cosmos was not always the King, but appears to have acquired the job fairly recently. His father was the previous King of All Cosmos (also called Emperor of the Cosmos, or Papa). The future King of All Cosmos grew up either on Earth itself or a planet very much like it, in a giant castle on a hill surrounded by green fields.

His father was a strict man, always pushing his son to go further, a trait which his son would inherit. He was a boxer in his younger years. The King once ranked second in a boxing tournament, thus angering his father, who threw the second place trophy off a bridge. After a later argument concerning a piece of leftover strawberry shortcake, the future King of All Cosmos ran away from home. During this trip, he met the future queen. After the severed end of his pompadour matched her half-eaten loaf of bread to form a heart, they fell in love, and began to date. He met his father before one of his dates, defying and striking him. His father then retreated home to reminisce over the boxing trophy, which he retrieved from the river after throwing it off a bridge. Seeing this, the future King of All Cosmos knelt to his father, and resolved their differences in tears. Shortly after being introduced to the future Queen of All Cosmos, the Emperor of All Cosmos fell ill and crowned his son The King of All Cosmos. A short time later, the Prince was born.

Some time after the Prince was born, the King of All Cosmos, during a drunken revel, accidentally destroyed all the stars in the sky. After waking up and realizing what he had done, he immediately sprang into action, sending his young son and his cousins down to Earth to roll up new stars. The travels of the Prince on Earth were covered in Katamari Damacy. After completing his goal to recreate the stars in the sky, the King of All Cosmos was surprised to discover that he had many fans down on Earth. Thus begins We ♥ Katamari, where the King of All Cosmos seeks to help fulfill the wishes of his fans - with the help from his son and his son's cousins, who again travel Earth, rolling things up into a Katamari.
